When to register?

Im getting married 12/31/10. I thought I should wait until May or June to register infear thiings I pick will get discontinued. But I read below that a 2011 Bride is registering today. AH! Am I behind? How many months out is appropriate?

I'm getting married in June and I registered in October (8 months out). My cousin is getting married in September and she hasn't even registered yet, but plans to do so soon. I guess it depends. My only concern doing it too soon would be what you said, that things would get discontinued. However you can always start a registry online and add a few things here and there- there are always certain things that will never get discontinued- in case people want to buy gifts early. Though I'd hold off on china and linens because I think those are the top things that get discontinued.

We did it around 8 months out, which is still pretty early (some people told me). We just happened to have a free weekend and wanted to check it off the list.

I found that a lot of people on my "club board" have been doings things SUPER early (like, one girl was moaning that her GMs hadn't ordered their tuxes yet in November, for an April wedding). So don't panic if you see that someone else is doing something earlier than you. With 11 months to go, I doubt you'd be behind on ANYTHING at this point.

We are doing it today (5 months out).  If you do it too early, like the girl you mentioned, you are right -- things will get discontinued.  Also, we wanted to wait until after the christmas shopping season we over so that we weren't getting less stock to choose from (since they make room on the shelves for holiday merchandise).

I began my registry in September for my May wedding and a good amount of things are already discontinued. Just revamped my registry and hope that it stays as is... it's frustrating b/c I really wanted some of that stuff. I would wait until about 6 months out unless you have a specific reason to do it sooner (engagement party etc).

Whether things you register for will get discontinued will depend on where you register and for what.  We didn't have that problem at all.

We registered at Williams-Sonoma a little more than a year out.  That was early, but we had lots of family and friends who were already asking my parents because they wanted to buy us engagement gifts.  Also, my shower was much earlier than most because my MOH was coming from London for it -- so it was scheduled for when she was going to be in town for something else too.  We registered for our china, silver and crystal about 7 months out... much closer to the shower.

Well, if the things get discontinued then how would people buy them? Or do you mean you would alert family/friends to your registry in advance?  As uppereast said, if guests plan to buy a gift for your engagement (party) then it would make sense to start earlier.

I'm getting married in May.  I started my registry in Dec and almost done with it.  To be honest, I'd wait until later on towards your wedding. I know it's exciting and fun, but new models come out and your taste may even change by then.  Good luck!

I'm getting married in August and have not registered yet. Was going to go tomorrow but FI has to work late :( I think as long as you register before the invitations (shower or wedding, whichever go first in your case) go out you're good to go.

I can't remember exactly, but I know we started a very small registry when we first got engaged (2 years out) because a lot of people asked, and then did our big one maybe 9-10 months out? My family is crazy and bought stuff months and months in advance for my shower. I think I had almost my full set of china purchased 6 months out! I don't know if we just got lucky, but I really didn't have any issues with anything being discontinueed, with the exception of the china pattern, which had already been purchased so it didn't matter.

I went prety early a little over a year out - it was mainly b/c we had time to do it and people wanted to get us engagament gifts and worked out b/c we got some for my birthday and christmas. We didn't register for bedding or bath room stuff yet b/c they told us that is the most common thing to be discountinued. We plan on doing that in the next few months

We started our registries about a year out because we were asked to do it before our engagement party.  We haven't put on sheets or towels or things like that yet, plan to do this closer to the wedding (August).  We actually got some things off the registry for Christmas, which was really nice.

I'm not sure if I'm the 2011 bride that you're talking about, but my fiance and I went to Macy's on Monday to start our registry.  We had been fielding tons of questions from people who wanted to get us engagement gifts (trust me, I'm not complaining about that!), plus we want to do what we can when we have the time.  With that said, the lady at Macy's told us not to register for sheets, towels, etc. because they are discontinued regularly (just like a bunch of the other girls said).  I honestly don't think that we would have decided to register so early if 1) people weren't asking us constantly and 2) we wouldn't be working 80+ hours a week in the months before our wedding.

We registered over a year before the wedding... people were starting to bug us because they wanted to get us engagement presents, and who am I to stop them haha. I don't think you really need to worry about things being discontinued... just keep an eye on the registry and update as needed.
