Skipping centerpieces?

Probably an odd question, but have anyone of skipped having centerpieces? Is that odd?

Re: Skipping centerpieces?

  • I think the tables would look bare. Honestly, when people do really small centerpieces I still think it looks bare. You need something to cover the middle otherwise there is a big open space.
  • I agree, I think you need something. But there's no reason why it can't be small and simple . . . and DIY.

Candidly, I hate big/tall center pieces. It makes it impossible to talk to people on the other side of the table.
  • Agreed. Having nothing would look plain and bare. There are plenty of flower alternatives if you are concerned with cost. I once went to a wedding that had large silver candelabras and a silver ice bucket for wine on the tables (and a bottle of red and white), with random candles. No flowers whatsoever, and I bet the venue provided those. It looked elegant.

  • I think centerpieces should be done, but you can cater them to your style. I think someone on this board, maybe njgurl? Had a bunch of candle sticks in different holders, it looked really elegant and beautiful.

  • Look into cylinder vases with orchids (or a flower that can withstand being submerged in water) then you put a floating candle on top. A lot cheaper than flowers. That is what I am doing. I am doing 3 different ht vases. There will be petals on the table & votive candles too. It makes for a simple but elegant look! And inexpensive. I just can't see spending thousands of dollars on centerpieces.
  • Ditto PP. I think there has to be something on the table. Look into floral alternatives or DIY to save money.

  • we're doing it DIY. we both like to garden, so we're going to buying a few succulents, and plant them in little wooden crates - like the kind you see for clementine oranges. when it's over, we plan to replant them for our house. =)

This is what we did as well. We did Calla Lillys inside. i got the vases from a knottie who was selling $200 total I paid for 60 of them, I bought my own floaters from G&G in saddle brook. I bought mirrors from them too. It looked very elegant.

This is exactly what I wanted to do - and one of the times we saw our venue, it was actually set up with something similar on the tables and I LOVED it!, but for some reason my FI hates it. It is making me crazy! What man cares about the centerpieces! I know I should be happy he's involved, but really?!?

I don't know how involved your FI is with the wedding planning but my FI had alot to say at first and now does not care what flowers or floral arrangement I choose. Maybe he will get over it if you show him how much money you'd be saving by doing this?? Showing my FI how much money we can save is always a powerful argument.

  • Hopefully that's the case... We are meeting with a florist this weekend so maybe he'll see how much it can save!! Thanks!!

I did this too... a high vase with the orchid and small vases with "filler" flowers. We did a few high centerpieces because the ceiling was so high, but most tables had this low centerpiece. If you feel you need to "fill" the table, a runner might help too... you can DIY them pretty inexpensively.

  • I lucked out, my venue included centerpieces so I don't even have to worry about it, but if I did, I would have definitely opted for the tall vases with candles.

  • Agree with all above. We did floating candle centerpieces at our engagement party DIY and they were great. I'm getting married at David's Country Inn and centerpieces are included. I have a mtg next month with their in-house florist :)

  • Thanks for the suggestions girls! Guess I have to suck it up and deal, lol. I saw some great cynlinder vases from dollar tree for $1, but they only have one height- any suggested places to buy the other height cylinders, floating candles and possibly mirrors under? I have been leaning towards the immerged flowers in cylinders, I think you guys just sold me.
