Name Change

Hi Ladies,

I have a question for the MG's, when I go to change my name, do I need to change it with Social Security first and wait for the new card to come and then go to DMV, or can I go to the DMV first?

I know some things are changing with the DMV, I just want to be able to go once I have copies of the marriage license, but not wind up somewhere before I can change it and waste my time and a day off from work for nothing.

Thanks!!

Re: Name Change

  • You can do either or. I did not use my SS card as one of my forms of ID at DMV anyway. I think my existing driver's license and my marriage certificate were enough points, but I also had my passport - if you go on their website it will tell you what forms of ID you can bring, so I just gathered a bunch to be safe....my SS card wasn't one of them. I'm not sure if you have also moved, but since I needed to change my address on my license I also had to bring a bill (I brought a CC one) in my name with my new address on it to show as proof of the address change.

The SS card name change was super easy - show up, fill out a form, they enter the info and ask you to review it...you sign it and you're all done. I got my card less than a week later.

  • Yes I do need to do my address, we bought our house a year and a half ago and I still haven't changed it, I almost forgot about it until you mentioned it. My parents are a few blocks away so the mail I didn't change (government stuff) I just pick up whenever I walk the dog over there.

Thanks for the info, I can do both the same day then :)

  • I went to the SS office with a pre-filled application and was out in 25 minutes.  They took away my existing SS card and gave me an official stamped document which was my SS "card" until my new one came, so I took that to the DMV to show what I wanted my new last name to be.
  • I actually went to the DMV first.  All I needed was my old license and my marriage certificate. I went to SS office 2 days later.

The SS office didn't do that for me. I still have my old card. All I got was a receipt saying that I applied for a new card with this name/address. I did that first & am waiting for the card in the mail.<div>
</div><div>I just went to the MVC this morning, taking a 1/2 day off from work (unpaid) to do it. After STANDING for 1.5h in line, they tell me that my print out of my bank statement isn't official proof of address. It has to be a paper statement mailed to me. I have ebanking and NEVER receive paper statements. It's not an option, unless I want fees. I had to go to the bank to get them to print a statement and then stamp it official. Of course, I had to go back to work (1h each way, to work 3h total). So now I have to take yet another 1/2 day off to go back. Yey!</div>
