We didn't ask anyone to do a "toast" for us.  My MOH and his BM gave their speeches and no one else gave anymore.  I agree you shouldn't have to ask anyone to give a speech and who ever is giving it should be adult enough not to say anything stupid either.

We planned when our toasts/speeches would be for a few reasons:

    1) We were having open bar for eight hours and did not want to run the risk of any drunken embarrassing toasts, so Scheme Events maintained control of the microphone and knew who was "pre approved" to give a toast, anyone else would have to be cleared by bride or groom first.
    2) Since it was a big wedding, we didn't want some random person giving a toast every 10 minutes causing our guests to have to stop eating or dancing.
    3) Having them at a set time allowed us to get them in before the photographers and videographers would have left and also at a time that fit in the flow of the evening; we did them all in one shot between end of sit down dinner and start of dancing time.

We didn't ask anyone to toast though, my wife knew her dad wanted to give one, we knew the best man and MOH wanted to and then wife and I did.  My dad isn't one for public speaking so I kind of figured he wouldn't want to so I didn't ask, nor did he.  There was a lot of the wine glass tapping/kissing thing all night but no one else tried to give an impromptu toast.

Only our BM and MOH planned to give us speeches, but we left the floor open for anyone else who wanted to toast us and a couple of people did. It went great.

ETA: the toasts were timed, we did them right after the meal, this way people are not in "partying" mode yet. lol

Nice... did you actually pre-approve the speech, or you just trusted the people giving them?

Emp: I think your MOH and BM will probably give one because it is such a popular tradition. As far as when they give it, I think you could make a jokingly statement like "I hope the speeches are done before you both drink too much"

Thanks for the insight everyone... I'm the person who hates asking people for anything, so I guess I just envisioned this being awkward.  It doesn't seem like that big of a deal the way you all described what you did.  And I definitely think the time between dinner and dancing would be perfect.

No, we had confidence in everyone, although in hindsight, I would have volunteered to help the MOH with hers, it resulted in a lot of "huh?" expressions in the room just from it rambling and really not making much sense lol.

LOL! That was me at my sister's wedding. GOD I hope nobody remembers that! At least it wasn't as bad as my twin brother giving the toast at my older brothers wedding, word to the wise don't try and do stand up during a toast, in his defense though we were only 16 and the brides brother was pumping champagne in to him all night. LOL Looking back at all the past weddings I've been in/been to I'm not expecting any awesome speeches at our wedding but at least they're memorable :)

Of the 5 or 6 weddings we have been to this summer I have only heard one speech where I actually lol-ed.  It was a BM (and twin bro of the groom)... the ladies need to get their acts together!

Not sure why but 2011 is a big year for weddings that we're going to as well, besides our own.  FIve or six over just the summer months would make me start thinking of excuses lol.

I wish! This was 10 years ago, none of us can remember the jokes exactly just that they bombed. It was great! My twin brother is also the one who says he either going to be bringing a stripper or "lady of the night" to my wedding, it's shaping up to be a good time in Vegas!

I call them workin' girls lol.  Day after our wedding we hit the strip and one of my friends started collecting those escort cards they snap at you as you walk by so we took a pic of him handing out cards next to one of the guys handing out cards.

Agreed. Besides those we have 4 or 5  more weddings to attend before ours (and of the 10 weddings this year, 2 of them are my friend's). I know why, though... FI has sooooo many friends, and many people consider him to be their bf, and he has also never made an enemy in his life.  I always tell him he should run for mayor, but he hates politics (well, other people's politics).

DH did not want any toasts, but his momma insisted she give us a toast and next thing I knew uncles and cousins were grabbing the mic. LOL! That was the one thing we were trying to avoid.  If I could do that part over I would.  Thankfully there is no video of that moment.
