Cupcakes

Hey girls!

Did anyone have cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake? I've seen several pictures that I really love and FI's dad said he could make us a nice tiered stand if that's what we want to use but I haven't priced it out yet. If you don't mind sharing - do you know what the price is like for cupcakes and what good bakeries would be to check with? I'm getting married in Benson, so anywhere in a decent radius is a possibility.

I was thinking about cupcakes. Sadly, I didn't price them out. I was going to go with Cafe Carolina and Bakery. Lots of flavor options.

I've seen on a lot of bakery websites cupcakes starting around $2.50-$2.75 per cupcake.  That's what I see the most of

I  bet it's different in all the different cities, but the places I looked here in Wilmington had cupcakes starting at $4-$5 and I only had a budget of $3/person. So I had to go with traditional cake (which was still a little hard to find for that price). I think it is such a cute idea, though. My cousin had cupcakes at his wedding, but they also had a giant sized cupcake that they used to cut at the rehearsal.

well I do know that the price of cupcakes have gone up since there is a larger request for them.  Most places I have seen (Charlotte area) go anywhere from $4 to $7 a cupcake.

another option, if you have the time the morning of your wedding, is to DIY cup cake tower.  Harris Teeter has some of the best cupcakes around, and there price isn't bad either.  You can make your own large cupcake topper to cut or you can purchase some mega cup cakes to sit on top.  The cupcake tower is one that I think would be easy *and cheaper* to DIY.

I am actually going to have a cake, but will be doing a DIY dessert bar with petit fours, mini cheesecake tarts and cookies bought from Sam Club.

*and Amanda did have a really nice cupcake tower.  Her pictures are up on facebook.  And I know she has been really busy because her and her hubby now are foster parents for Jack Russells.

Ii'm having cupcakes for my september wedding, and after seeing prices (in raleigh) for up to $4/cupcake, i've decided to make my own! my mom, sisters, and i are going to bake them, and have a frosting party a few days before my friday night wedding. i was going to get my fiance to build me a tower, but i've decided to use various cake stands and platters at different heights. good luck!

Cew515 did.  She got married in the Winston-Salem area.  She's a reg on Snarky Brides if you want to ask her about it(don't worry; she isn't snarky).  They were red velvet cake cupcakes and they were excellent.

EDIT:  I see Benson is nowhere near Winston.  Sorry about that.

Amanda's cupcakes were awsome. :o) She had a big cupcake cake at the top, and then a ton of cupcakes underneath, it was super cute.

oooh Thanks guys! I wish Amanda was around! Haha!

I'm hoping to find those $2-$2.75 cupcakes but I think that's quite rare. I did find one bakery with $2 cupcakes but then I'll need to price a top tier and what decorations will cost because I'm sure that's just with icing.

FMFarrell - I admire you! The thought has definitely crossed my mind! Maybe we'll both be bakers :)

The Square Rabbit in downtown Raleigh has great cupcakes and they're not terribly expensive.  I've bought coconut--I know not everyone likes it--red velvet, and mocha chocolate from them.  All delicious.  They're all very reasonably priced.  Plus they're not those super-iced cupcakes that the specialty cupcake shops tend to sell.  I like icing, but those are a bit much for me.  And the SR folks are really nice.

I did Cupcakes and had them set up during the cocktail hour with take-out boxes if someone wanted to take them away.  I also had a traditional wedding cake because I wanted to do the whole cut the cake thing.  To save on money, I actually got the cupcakes from Wal-Mart.  They have good buttercream icing and I had already invested in the cake, I just HAD TO HAVE cupcakes too.  They were a big hit.  Here is a picture of how I set them up.  I put them on a tiered cupcake holder that i bought from Save On Crafts.com and then covered with damask paper to fit my decor.   I bought 6 dozen for $30, and bought little fake diamond rings from Michael's to put in the top.  They will take a special order for plaing cupcakes like mine.  I would say total cupcakes and stand costs me about $50 give or take shipping for the stand.
