Room Block

For all the out of towners, how did you handle the hotel situation? We were thinking about getting a room block at the Red Rock, but their prices have already increased and without knowing how many people are coming yet (our wedding is May 27th), we are having a hard time providing them with a room block count. They have also increased their costs for a room with two queen beds. Did anyone out there have a room block anywhere or did you just provide them with some options near your wedding venue?  If you did have a room block, how did you estimate the # of guests that would opt to stay there?  Thanks!

I did room blocks at the Orleans and Monte Carlo. The price was good and most people used the blocks at the Orleans and then the rest stayed where ever they wanted to.  At first I was really worried that I wouldn't get enough rooms, but since most didn't use them when I checked 30 days before the wedding, I found out that 85% stayed all over the strip based on the internet deals they found or preference.
We invited 140 - figured half would show, I held 40 rooms.  In the end 15 rooms used at the Orleans (all elderly family), no rooms used at the Monte Carlo.  We had 85 guests come.

IMO most will stay where they want to, I wouldn't worry about it.  Is there a charge to do it? If you have to give a number, go with maybe 25% of your guest list or ask some of your guests where they intend to stay to see if its even worth booking the block.

I did a room block at the GN for Thursday-Sunday.  I did half the rooms in the Rush tower and half in the Gold (I didn't block any of the lowest level tower).  I booked 10 on Thursday and Sunday and then 30 on Friday and Saturday.  Of all my guests, most stayed at the GN, of those some booked specials in the Carson tower and one used their player status to book the room.  Two other couples booked rooms at a higher level that weren't in the block.

The great thing was that the rate was frozen from January to July.  Yes, there were internet specials but they could always count on this rate which was $20 per night below rack.

We did a room block at Green Valley Ranch, which is a sister property of Red Rock.  We just started out with a block of 10 rooms and they let us increase the block as necessary.

We didn't do a room block, but posted great deals and hotel info on our wedding website and let people decide on their own.  People stayed all over, based on their tastes and budgets.

Thanks everyone for your help. This has been more stressful than I hoped it would be, but I think we are going to start with 10 rooms  (there is a charge if we don't fill the rooms) and then we have to sign an addendum to the contract if we go a lot over, However, our guests would still get charged the room block price as long as there are rooms still available.
