Checks written in my married name

I have a question regarding gifts?  We have received many checks and almost all of them were written to either Mr. & MRs. Married Name or Jennifer & Scott Married Name.  I am not changing my name until the spring, we are using my checking account to put all the money into.

Will the banks give me a problem if I try to deposit these into my account, even though it's not my name yet?

I had to cash a few checks after the wedding that had my married name on them, before I had gotten a chance to change it. Luckily, they didn't give me much of a hassle, but I did take our marriage license with me each time just in case. Do you have yours yet?

I have the marriage certificate that they gave us the day of the wedding. I'm guessing that might not be good enough?

Maybe I'll just take it to the bank tomorrow with both of us and see what the bank says.  I guess people just thought I'd change my name right away?

I took our marriage licence with me until I had my new drivers licence (Silly CA...the only state that does not print them AT the DMV) and had no problems.

Apparently, they do that in NC too! I haven't gotten my NC license yet, but Rich did--and he had to wait for it in the mail. I've never heard of that before!

One of my banks requires that I have my new DL before changing my name, but since my husband is already on my account (and has been for years) they accepted the checks issued to "Mr. & Mrs."  without much of a problem.

My understanding is that most banks will accept it as a third-party check if you sign it with both your maiden name and your married name.  Your best bet is probably just to call your bank and ask.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

Oh! Ok at least we are not the ONLY state! I never knew that they did that in other states until my BFF moved to AZ and told me :)

MN doesn't give you your DL right away either, Stinkerbell.

I cashed some checks with my married name BEFORE the wedding...and just signed them as usual and then my new last name after it.  The bank didn't even question it.

We had no problem taking the checks right away to our  credit union. We were leaving for NOLA and wanted the $$, and I wasn't changing my name til after the honeymoon.

It might help I know most of the tellers :)

Thanks all!! We are going to go down together with our marriage certificate and see what happens. It doesn't seem like we will have much of a problem from what I'm reading. I'll let you know!

    :)
