(free) room upgrade at check in

Anyone mention that they are in town for their wedding/birthday/bachelorette party, etc during check in and get upgraded for free?

Our trip is both for the wedding and my birthday and I hope (crosses fingers) that they hook us up lol

Re: (free) room upgrade at check in

  • You may have more luck trying the $20 trick than hoping they upgrade you for free. :-)  What you might want to do before arriving is enroll in the resort's players card program, that sometimes helps.

So when you go to check in, you just (subtlety) give the person behind the counter $20? Do you ask for a room upgrade also?

This is all new to me. I usually just hope they give it to me for free for being nice.

My version of the trick that I used to use was I'd walk up to the counter, I'd open my wallet and lay out my ID, credit card and $10 and just leave the wallet sitting there open.  I'd tell them who I was, I am checking in and I was wondering if there were any upgrade options available.  If I got nothing, they got nothing.  If I got something okay but nothing to write home about, I'd give them the $10.  If it was a big upgarde, I'd get another $10 and give them $20.  I'd say I got upgraded about 75% of the time, but who knows if I'd have gotten upgraded anyway.

Once I started gambling more I didn't have to do the trick anymore, but I probably would have a lot more money now if I'd just stuck to paying my way and hitting the low limit tables lol.

  • You would say upon checking in, ' Is it possible to get an upgrade' as you hand them your credit card also have the $20 bill behind it Wink There's some that glady take the $20 and upgrade you and others that will say 'That isn't necessary', give you the $20 back and upgrade you anyways.
  • That's a good tip...I'm definitely going to try it!
  • Sweeeeeeeet. I'm a member of total rewards and we're doing a group booking thru total experiences so I'll lay our my rewards card, ID and a $20 <fingers crossed>

    Thanks for the tips!
  • I tried the $20 trick at Planet Hollywood last June and it worked!. On our first night, we booked a regular Hip Room and were hoping to get upgraded.  I handed the clerk my ID and Credit Card with a $20 bill between both items and asked, "Are there any complimentary upgrades available?"   While we didn't get upgraded to a suite, we were upgraded to a Resort Vista Room which had a great view of the strip and a bigger bedrrom and bathroom area.  I'll be trying this again next time I visit!
  • when i went to vegas a few years ago we stayed at the mgm grand we checked in and asked for upgrades they said we dont give them i said oh were in town for my birthday. he said i can give you a view of the strip. so thats what we got
  • yeah unfortunately mentioning our wedding didn't get us any upgrades or anything special beyond congratulations, and we checked into three different hotel rooms during the week we were in Vegas lol. Money talks, I've heard of people having good results with the $20 approach.
  • My birthday got us a high floor with south strip view at the Vdara. For our wedding we just booked the suite we would like but will definitely be aaking for an upgrade.

  • I'm definitely going to try the $20 trick for our wedding but there is only 2 suites above the one we booked, as far as price goes. I'm hoping it works though!

  • We tried the $20 trick at Paris and got shut down. lol  She was like "Sorry there is nothing I can do, management is cracking down on the "$20 trick" and watch the camera's closely" :( I was like "oh ok, thanks for letting me know. Does it say we booked directly with the hotel and is our total rewards number on there?" She smiled and said "No, can I get it from you and give me a second.... Ok your original room was 11th floor regular deluxe room, I have now comp'd you a upgrade to a corner suite on the 22nd floor, have a nice weekend and thanks for being a member."

I asked why the upgrade and her answer was like if you book through the hotel/total rewards they appreciate it because they don't get docked fees for using a 3rd party. You also can't use your membership numbers through a 3rd party to get points.

If you booked through the hotels website and you don't have a players card of what ever - total rewards, mlife or grazie, go get one at the membership desk before you check in.  I think most have online sign up's as well and you just pick up your card before you check in.
