Not from NC

Hey girls
I am from New Jersey and im getting married up here but FI and I are moving to Charlotte after the wedding because he got transfered down there... so my question is where do i move... looking for an area with a great school system. We heard through googling that Matthews, NC was good place. Anyone have any advice.. oo and we are looking to rent. so any ideas on places to rent would be extremely helpful! thanks girls!!

I think the first thing to look at is where is your husband going to be working, what part of the city? If he's working way up in north Charlotte, let's say, he might find a commute to Matthews very tiresome. Matthews and the Ballantyne area are very nice sections to live, though.

Oh ok, that's in the western part of the city, if you lived in the Matthews or Pineville area, DH could hop onto 485 and go right to the airport. You might even want to look into the Lake Wylie/Fort Mill area (right over the border in SC), excellent area to live in, and amazing school systems. I told DH the other day that whenever it's time to sell our current house, I think we should look down there.

PS - Get involved on the City Data - Charlotte forum (Google: City data forum charlotte). VERY helpful people on there, lots of chatter about neighborhoods and schools, and people moving to the area. I used it before I moved here (Im from NJ too, like 99% of the ppl you'll meet here are, lol Wink ).

I'm a displaced Jersey girl too!!  You're gonna love NC, great weather, nice people, and the pace of life is MUCH less frenetic.  I will always love Jersey, but NC rocks!

I live in the Matthews area and my dad works at the airport too!  I love this area; it has everything you need.  You are close to highways to access malls and downtown, which is great!  There are great schools here.  The area is really diverse, which I love and deeply appreciate.  Let me know if I can help at all!

I'm from Charlotte and I hope you'll love it as much as I do! Matthews is an excellent place to live.  I agree with Katherine, working at the airport you will want to live close to 485 so you can hop on it to 77 and be close to the airport.  My grandmother lives in Fort Mill... wonderful beautiful town. Its cheaper living in SC too vs Charlotte area.  And it would still be close to the airport.  I would stay away from anything super close to the airport, its not the best place in town.

We just bought a house in Lake Wylie/Fort Mill area and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! Although we are still technically in Mecklenburg County so the "future kids to have" will go to those school, however, they have just built a new elementary school around the corner from us and are making plans for new future middle and high schools in the area.

It would take your FI no time at all to get to the airport. It is sooo easy to get to just about anyplace from here.

thanks girls i am super excited to move to NC as a little girl my aunt lived in NC and my mom would take me once a month to visit her and i just loved it down there. I dont think im too concerned with traffic to the airport as my FI goes into work at 3am. I am more concerned with school system and the quality of the area. I want my future children to go to a great school.
So can you guys give me a guess on how long the commute would be to the airport from Matthews?? (without traffic unless there is traffic at 3am lol) thanks girls you are making me want to move down there tomorrow!!

From Matthews to the airport at 3AM you're talking 25 minutes if DH takes Independence Blvd/277/74. Turns out 485 is actually the longer way to go and takes more time (30 minutes). From Fort Mill, it'd also be 25 minutes, taking I-77 and 485. Wink I am going to INSIST you check out Fort Mill, everyone I know who lives there and has children RAVES about the school system there and how pleased they are with the schools. It's a VERY rapidly growing area.
