Cape photographers

Hi,
having a hard time picking the right photographer, need some suggestions. I love photos and don't want to just go with the cheaper options but i don't think i can afford some of the ones that I love. any ideas on either great, well priced photographers or how to cut back on photo expenses without missing out?
Thanks.

It might help if you gave us a specific budget that you are trying to stick to and also if you told us who the "expensive" photographers are that you have found and like. I don't know who you've looked at but there are a lot of photographers in the Greater Boston area who would travel to the Cape and still be cheaper than the local photographers.

For our wedding, we chose Portrait New England because we had a limited budget and they were the ones (to us) who really stood out among the other photographers in the same price range. I was really happy we went with them, they went above and beyond, and I never felt like I would've gotten more or better pictures if I had hired someone who charged more.

Let us know your budget and who you like so we can be more specific about our suggestions-

I got an amazing photographer she is in plymouth but she will be coming to Dennis for our wedding day. She is so friendly so easy to work with and has GREAT pricing for what the packages are. You should check out her website...just google The Classic Image  in Plymouth Ma her name is Deb Gray. We Love her, I have some e-photos that she did and if you want to PM me I'll be glad to send you some of my favorites ... good luck : )

We used Elizabeth Horne. I thought she was mid range, or maybe slightly higher, in terms of price, but I loved her work.

One way to cut back is to cut out albums. We opted to buy te DVD with all our pictures and make our own prints and albums. They aren't as nice as professional ones would have been, but we have the files for these photos forever and can always buy a fancy schmancy album if we really want one later on.

Also consider how many hours you need the photographer. After the first dances and cake cutting and such, it's mostly just a lot dancing pics, so you could cut back there. That would only work if you don't have a big exit planned, of course.

We're using Shoreshotz with Amanda Considine :) She's so awesome to work with, and I love her work.

You can see it on her website:

We were so happy with our engagement photos, and can't wait to see how our wedding pictures come out!

    Thanks for all the advice.
I have spoken with ShoreShotz and really like her work and she seems very nice, she is just a little high on our price range. I was hoping to be closer to $1,500 and don't want to go over the $2,000 for sure.
I have also checked out some info on both Bella and their sister company Studio Blue. has anyone used them? They do alot online so its a little less personal maybe but their prices seem very reasonable.

I also liked paul blackmoore ( i think that's his name) and found others that were around the $2,000 mark but wasn't thrilled with their photos- just OK.

appreciate the help, i'm thinking of just needing 6 hours and really want to get the best quality for my money.

We are using Amber Shomo with forevercandid photography. She's based out of Salem, but she's traveling to the cape for my wedding for no fee. Her packages start at $1800, but she worked with us to form a package to make sure we got what we want to fit our budget. So we are paying $1500 for 5 hours of coverage, 2 photographers, an engagement session, and a disk with copyrights of all images. She's somewhat of a new business but she's soooo talented. Definitely look into her!

I used Studio Blue!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanted Amanda from Shoreshotz, but we got married on a Sunday and she had a CT wedding the night before. Studio Blue was my back up plan. I was assigned a great photographer, Joseph Webb, from the Boston area. He owns his own company, and did a great job for us. We've got nothing but compliments on our photos. I unfortunately realized after the wedding that I was missing some real staple wedding photos (variety of composition of shots=meaning not enough vertical orientation photos, pics of just me and my Mom, an alone shot of myself!!!!!!!!!!!!). With Studio Blue you're at the mercy of whoever you're assigned to. Again, I thought Joe was good, we just needed him to take more detail shots. He had an amazing eye for color, and his photos were so good that Studio Blue barely had to edit any of the photos. Also, if you're having your wedding further out than Hyannis Studio Blue had me pay an additional $500 "travel fee". I think how they assign you to a photographer is very personal, we rated hundreds of photos and the quiz we took helped a lot too. No qualms with how they assigned Joe to us.

The customer service lately has been awful. We had amazing customer service up until the time we were ready to order prints and our photo book (January). The previous customer service rep and I were on a first name basis, super prompt and bent over backward to help us. He's either in a new position or left the company, and now that department is grossly understaffed. We've been working out the details of our album for months now. It's been disappointing.

Our package with them, other than the travel fee, was affordable. We didn't have a second photographers or a vidiographer. We were right around $2,100 because had Joe for an extended time. Studio Blue has com

e out with some amazing steals and deals since we got married, and I wish we could've had some of those other incentives. I definitely think they are worth the value, provided your assigned photog is good, but again the customer service has been unbelievably slow, so I guess you get what you pay for.

Let me know if you have any more questions! :)

We are using Dave McWilliams Photography out of Hyannis!!! He is AMAZING. And very reasonable. His website is DaveMcWilliams.com-he's very artsy and not a "run of the mill", "point and shoot" photographer!

I would seriously recommend to anyone who's trying to book a photographer at a lower price point, inquire with a photographer to adjust their coverage or set up a payment plan that works for you. Or ask them to refer you to other photographers that they think would be more affordable. A lot of photographers  have assistants who are learning from the best, but don't have their own business yet. Vendors talk to each other all the time! My makeup artist is located in southern NH and she had a bevy of vendors in the area that she could've referred me to, and even lists some on her makeup website. I also never would've looked at my reception venue on my own. I didn't like the location and from what I could see of it online I was just not interested. After looking at venues way out of our budget to the other extreme of venues that didn't have any of the qualities we wanted our wedding to have, an innkeeper in Brewster strongly encouraged us to look at the Orleans Inn. Ed worked an incredible deal with us, we got the venue at 20% off, and a ton of other perks we weren't expecting. Posting on here is a good start, but you'll definitely have to reach out to some vendors for referrals. HTH!

I just had my engagement photos done with Portrait New England and just from the raw photos I saw from their cameras the pictures were amazing. My FI isn't comfortable around a camera and they did a fantastic job putting him at ease. I can't wait to work with them for the wedding. I would seriously look into them, as their prices are extremely reasonable.

I also did look into Paul Blackmore, who's pictures were great, but I found his packages started around $4000.

My friend is a wedding photographer who's trying to start doing it full time.  He's running a special right now for $750!  Check out his site for sample pics and contact info: http://bostonweddingphotos.net
