Who can officiate?

My apologies if there is another thread like this...

I recently attended a wedding where the couple had to go to the justice of the peace the day before their ceremony to actually "get married" (with license and all that jazz).  They had found out last minute that the minister/friend they chose to officiate their ceremony could not legally marry them in NC.

i've seen a few posts on here lately from brides having ceremonies officiated by friends who are not necessarily ordained ministers, and out of my own curiosity, I was wondering if anybody had any insight into the matter.

Who can perform a legally recognized wedding ceremony?

In NC a wedding can be performed by "minister or magistrate".  NC does not officiall recognize internet-ordinations, so you can't have you friend take an online class and then marry you.

    What she said. . .

Also. . if you've got someone in mind and arent 100% positive they'll be recongized, CALL and ask the court house in the county where you'll get married at (that or where you live. . I'm pretty positive its where you'll get married at).

DH's aunt married us, but she was ordained through a school or something, i can't fully rememberd. Anyways, we wanted to make sure that our marriage would be legal (because that would suck and be a rude awakening) and those at the office cleared her :o)
