I decided to just do a post cause I didn't want to hijack JCWhitey's Thanksgiving post. haha
Right now I intern for the Department of Public Health Elderly and Disabled Waiver Program. Basically we contract with direct service providers and help hook client's up with the services they may need to keep them in-home care instead of nursing home and/or assisted living. We provide a homemaker to assist with everyday cleaning tasks such as laundry, vacuuming, preparing light meals and running light errands; a companion to assist the individuals in going to the doctor and communicating with the skilled medical assistant; a personal care individual to assist with bathing and grooming necessities; we also have a provider that delivers frozen meals weekly; the list goes on and on.
I'm wrapping up this internship on December first, and graduating May 5th. I was originally looking for a placement in more of the clinical field, but oh well, it's still pretty interesting and really educational.
I'm really passionate about STD/STI awareness in the US and how our rates are a billion times (might be slightly dramatic) higer than different countries with different approaches on sex education. My dream would be to somehow shift the way we're moving into younger generations with careless sexual interactions resulting in billions of tax dollars a year (now I'm not being dramatic lol) going towards teenage mothers with unwanted pregnancies. Soo-- while I've enjoyed my time here with the elderly and disabled population, I've always known that it's not for me.. Humphhhh.
That's great though that there's another SW on our boards! What is it that you do? You probably would've appreciated my FB status the day they announced pizza as a vegetable. After I ranted the end of it said "SOCIAL WORKERS, ATTACK!!!!!!!!" haha My friends in my major got a kick out of it. ha
