I made the decision to go back to college to get a marketing degree (my degree is in theater... which was great when I was an actor but got burned out fast). I am all signed up, registered, and classes are paid for so I'm set. But my FSIL put a thought in my head that I just can't get out...
I am a huge natural birth/home birth advocate and have actually had the honor of photographing a few home births through my business. It's always been an interest of mine and FSIL pointed out how our area has only one CNM (certified nurse midwife) for the whole county and the surrounding areas. There's a definite shortage around here and she saw it as an opportunity for me. So I've been floating around the idea in my head to go to nursing school instead of getting my marketing degree.
Here's my big issue. To get my marketing degree I'll only be in school 2.5-3.5 years and then I'll have a second degree which always looks nice (even if one is an acting degree). To become a CNM I'd have to get me pre-reqs (1.5 years), go to nursing school (2 years), and then go into a CNM program (2 years). That's 5.5 years of schooling and it would require us to temporarily relocate for the CNM program. FI says he is fully willing to do that so that's not an issue, but it still might mean uprooting a family if we have kids by then.
I would LOVE to be a midwife. More than working in marketing or business. I just don't know if I have 5.5 more years of schooling in me or the time to commit to it. On top of that, I have a business that I don't want to abandon. I also really have little interest in being a general RN. My goal would be solely to become a CNM and work either in home birth or in a birth center (possible in one attached to a hospital but would prefer stand-alone). So right now I am so torn on what to do! It just so happened that the classes I registered for would work for both tracks so I do have a semester to decide but come fall I'll need to have my mind made up.
SO... if you are an RN, would you recommend it to someone else? Is it worth the time?

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.
