March 2012 Weddings

Newbie - Hi and questions

I've been lurking on this board for a while, so I thought I'd say hi!

I'm getting married on March 24, and still have a ton of stuff to do. I finished my Master's degree last week. I was supposed to graduate three months ago, so the delay has put a dent in my wedding planning. I'm also long distance planning (three hours away) so it's been hard to plan. Vendors are busy with other weddings on weekends!

My fiance brought up the issue today that we haven't even thought about our honeymoon. It would probably be best if we took a vacation before I start working. At this point, would it be best if put off booking so we can get a last minute deal or try to find something now? I plan to get my HepA booster shot soon, but we need enough notice to start taking anti-malarials if we go somewhere like the Dominican. We've been there before and I got quite a few mosquito bites, even at the resort. We want to go somewhere warm. I'm a little sick of this -10 degree weather.

  • I'm guessing since you don't have a city listed that you're not from the US. Cruises are the most economical easy to book option. Depending on where you're at, you could fly somewhere and stay a few days and then take a cruise. Florida has 5 cruise ports.

<div>Good guess, I'm getting married in Toronto, Canada. We have a very tight budget since we are both grad students ($1000 each). We considered cruises, but we worry about all the extra costs when visiting the ports. My friends and family said to have a $500 or so buffer for land trips. Flights from Canada to the US tend to be very expensive, but I'm willing to drive to Florida for a cruise to save money. But I worry about running into bad weather and missing the departure. We've been snowed out driving through Pennsilvania before.</div><div>
</div><div>Can you get good last minute deals on cruises? Any good web sites to book?</div>
  • Yes, the last minute deals are usually good. Because at that point they are trying to get the ship as close to full as possible. We booked our HM cruise right through Carnival's website. You can see what they individual cruise lines sites have and go from there.

    Good luck with it all!

  • Hi there and welcome! We haven't booked our HM yet either and we're getting married on the 18th. I think we're doing a cruise as well and have been researching a lot of different cruise lines. I think we're going to go with either Carnival or Celebrity Cruises. We live in FL though so we've got more options as far as what ports. If you're getting married on the 24th the earliest you'd be able to leave from a port is like the 31st. From what I've seen the dates are around the 24th, 25th and 31st. I think you'd have plenty of time to drive to FL even if there was a little bad weather! Good luck and let us know if we can help you with anything else! :-)
  • Last-minute cruises are great in the spring!  BUT keep in mind that though you may drive to save money, you usually have to pay at least a few hundred $$s for parking a week at the port... Don't forget that, gas, wear/tear on your car, and time!!  Might be worth setting up a flight tracker on kayak.com.. it'll alert you when flights go down in price! Good luck!

  • Hello! I thought I'd welcome you, although I don't have any input on the cruise question. :/

Hope all is going well with your planning!

Welcome and good luck with all the upcoming planning. :) What made you just now decide to start posting with the wedding date so close?
