Issue with BM dress...

Sorry for the multiple posts today! But anyway, I am having an issue with my cousin's dress for the wedding...back in August when she got fitted and measured, she had just had a baby 3 wks prior...so she told the woman to get her a size 8, not a 10.  The woman insisted on getting a 10.  So now the dress is HUGE on her (she lost all her baby weight) and she will need major alterations!! I feel awful that she will have to pay so much for alterations since the dress was kinda pricey.  Should I call the bridal shop and see if she can get a smaller dress?  Do they even do exchanges?? I am thinking no, but I also thought maybe they would take it back and could use it as a sample in the store?  I dunno...I just wish I could help her!  I feel obligated to help her pay for the alterations or help her buy a new dress....sigh...

  • I think you should totally call the bridal shop and ask to exchange it for a smaller size. If they haven't touched the dress yet for alterations, then I don't see why they cannot exchange it!

  • I'm not sure what their policy would be. Can't hurt to try. It does suck that it will need some major alterations, but at the same time your bm should have stuck up for herself and pushed for the size she really wanted. I mean she had 7 months to drop the weight. She was the one wearing the dress and not the stupid saleswoman.

    Either way huge bummer!
  • I would try. I had a bm who was preggers and had her baby... but I wanted her to oreder a really big size just because not everyone loses the weight after. Your cousin is really lucky :)

  • Most bridal shops will tell you no on the exchange, but it doesn't hurt to as least ask. Your cousin had to have agreed somewhat to the 10, they wouldn't just order a different size than what she asked for. Granted, they may have pushed her, but she had to have said okay at one point. Honestly, there's not much you can do. A couple of my girls are really short. Not only were all of the dresses way too big on every BM, but the ones that are shorter have to get it drastically hemmed to fit at their knee cap. I hate that they have to spend that much, but at the same time, I don't think you should feel obligated because it's so big. I'd recommend calling around and checking alterations prices before settling on an overpriced quote. If you're getting alterations done at the salon, I bet they're charging you at least 50% higher than a normal seamstress. So, call around and see what you can find, but definitely don't feel bad, it's not your fault.

  • I wouldn't see the harm in calling and asking the Bridal shop to exchange the dress. And maybe, you can go to the manager of the store and explain the situation. The worst they can tell you is no...I'm sorry you have to deal with this..
