Tipping Questions

I know this question has been asked on several boards, but I just want to check in here since this is where I spend most of my time. Please forgive me for even having to ask, but I figured it's best to confirm!

I know I'll be tipping my hair/makeup girl the day of.

Our venue is privately owned property -- the woman lives in the top floor of the house and rents out her property and the bottom floor for weddings. Does she get tipped? I've read conflicting reports on this, so I wanted to get your opinions.

We're renting linens, and they're coming out to dress the tables and take the linens away at the end of the night. Do they get tipped?

Our food/bar vendor already put the tip into the contract, so that's taken care of.

My mom's gift to us for the wedding is that she's paying for a horse and carriage to bring me, my brother and my flower girl to the aisle and to take me and FI away (but all is happening on site, so we aren't going far). Do I tip them?

What kind of tip is considered standard? I want to be sure everyone gets treated right -- I really don't want to slight anyone by accident.

Thanks!!

Re: Tipping Questions

  • If you're paying the vendor directly it's not necessary to tip.  As far as any one assisting the vendor it's customary to tip as well as tipping any type of driver.  I generally tip 15-20% of cost of service, however, i also tip according to service, bad service less tip or no tip, excellent service probably will get more in a tip.
  • Thanks, Rachel!

  • Good Question.  I plan to tip the limo driver but I am unsure about other vendors like the florist and photographer??  I know my venue has tax and tip included so I wont be tipping them.

If your venue is privately owned, all the money you are paying is going directly to the owner, so they do not need a tip. Anytime you work directly with someone who owns the company, it is the usual to not tip them.

For your linens, I saw that it was customary to tip at least $5 - $10 per person. I'm tipping $10 on mine (there will be about 6 people there to deliver/set up).

For the carriage ride, you generally tip the driver (unless they're the owner) even if you're not going very far. You can base your tip on the length of the ride if you want or just do a percentage of the total bill.

For the photogapher, they get tipped if they don't own the business. You can do a flat amount ($10 or so) per photog. Or give them one tip as a percent of the bill.

For the florist, it depends on how much work they will be doing. I saw that you should tip the delivery people about $10 per person. But if they're only bringing flowers and not having to set centerpieces, etc. you can do $5 per person.

The cake vendor will be delivering your cake as well, and most likely it won't be the owner coming to do that. If it is, you can forgo the tip. If it's not, you should tip $5 - $10 for the delivery person.
