Adoption

So I was bored and saw and ad and I decided to try and look at pictures of Russian children available for adoption. Well I couldn't get to the pictures but I found a chart they had for expenses of adopting a child from different countries. The cheapest place was the Dominican Republic at $15,000. Russia was $27,500. No wonder there are so many kids without homes!! Holy cow. I think a couple could do a few rounds of in-vetro and pay for the medical bills of having a kid and still come out ahead of adopting!!

Re: Adoption

  • That is exactly why I plan on adopting locally if Fi and I are unable to have kids the old fashioned way. Adoption through the foster care system is so much cheaper, even if it does come with potential hardships.

  • Wow! That's so crazy! I would have never imagined that's how much it would cost.

  • IVF can be $15,000+, too, and doesn't always work.  More than half of the women I know who did IVF weren't successful the first time.

Also, I think your adoption numbers are a little off.  My friends adopted from Ethiopia and it only cost them around $10,000 and they claim that included everything including the home study, dossier, travel, and adoption fees.

Finally, I'm really not sure about IVF but I know for international adoption the US government offers over $12,000 in tax credits.  For my friends that pretty much covered the entire cost of their adoption.  The only thing not covered was their travel and I do believe her employer covered that cost.

That's actually why they opted to adopt internationally.  They knew between her employee adoption benefits and the tax credits it would be more affordable.  And after a really bad situation trying to adopt from the US they decided to go international to avoid that situation again.  For them, it worked.  But it won't for everyone.  And if you want a blond haired blue eyed kid, sadly, they are more expensive.  Weird, huh?

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

Tee hee :) What a totally random thing to do when you are bored!! :D My cousin recently adopted 2 small boys (brothers) from here in the states and it is a long/greuling/expensive process. But seriously, I know without a DOUBT those two kids are the luckiest.ever.

Also, randomly, my best friend's wife works for A World For Children and each year we throw a huge party for her foster kids (and their parent homes) and give them toys. I couldn't even imagine what trauma that situation can cause for a child.
  • I'm adopted so I've always been pro-adoption but FI wants his own kids.  I had a cousin that did IVF and it ended up costing her $40,000 but got her a gorgeous baby.  So for her next child she adopted locally.
