Marriage License Question

Hi everyone!!

So the FI and I are planning on going to get our marriage license during the first week of April (my spring break).  We will be getting married in McMurray, PA (south of the city), but we live in Northern VA.  I am wondering....do we need to get the license from the county that we will be getting married in?  Does anyone know about this??  I read that if you get it in another county then you can use it anywhere in PA, but it also says that the officiant needs to file the license - how does the officiant file it if you got it 2 hours from Pittsburgh??

Yes, you can get it in any county regardless of what county the wedding is in. The officiant signs and mails it in so it doesn't really matter that it's two hours away. We just got ours last Friday and were notified that it was mailed out today. Even in Allegheny County it was an easy and quick process with about an hour wait. And we got a self united license without difficulty.

  • Prices actually fluctuate, as well (I was surprised by this!).  It was cheaper and less of a hassle to get it in Washington County -- $40 in Washington, $75 in Allegheny -- and NO waiting in line!  Just a tip! :)

So, even if you're getting it in another county that is closer to the PA stateline, compare some of the prices.  I think it's worth saving $35!

  • WOW $35 dollars!! I had plans on getting out marriage license in Washington County because we live there, but wow I am amazed that one country over can charge and extra $35. I can understand $5 or $10. but WOW!!
