NWR-Housing Hunt Rant

Our lease in our current apartment is up at the end of January. We have to give them a 30 day notice of move out, okay cool! Our dllema...We live in a town with one of the major universities, Texas A&M, and that puts us fighting with all the students fighting for off campus housing! On top of that, a lot of places jack up their prices because of that. They know that most students who come here that mommy and daddy pay for their living expenses so they will fork out whatever the cost of rent. DF and I are not in that boat! We are a family with 4 children between us that are coming and going between our ex's.

We've started looking at new places because our current place is rather small for 2 teenagers, a kindergartener, and a 4 year old, along with the two of us. Thank goodness it's never all 6 of us under this roof at once! We found a really nice place yesterday. It's adoarable! Rent is really reasonable too. A plus to add, my only cousin in the area lives right across the street! The owner is willing to negotiate the price of the rent. Original rent was $450 a month for a year. We countered with $400 for a two year lease. We loved that place so much! He also knows that we can't do anything until January. We are afraid that he will jack the price up because of the students. He said that he did offer student discounts, which DF will be a student next semester so that may help.

I hate moving. End Rant...

Re: NWR-Housing Hunt Rant

  • Unfortunately most/all college towns are like that with inflated pricing. I don't think it has anything to do with "mom and dad's money" but rather supply and demand. That sounds like a great deal though, I hope it works out for you!

it's more supply and demand. seriously, we looked at apartments a short drive away and the prices were dramatically different. we stayed near campus until H graduates, siince he rides his bike to school, but once our lease is up we're moving out of the college town.

COL is higher there too, right? you would make less doing the same job in Houston than in NY.

I have a friend who lives in Houston who works in the same industry as me and she only makes a little less than I do. So many young people are moving out of NY (NYC/Long Island area) because the housing costs are just ridiculous. The COL keeps going up, but our salaries stay the same. New families starting out can't afford to live here, when a modest 3BR house costs about 400k. My friend just bought a house about a year ago. It was a fixer upper and she paid like 365k for it, but her mortgage is 2500 a month! I don't even make that much, let alone have to pay all the utilities and food, etc. It's impossible and depressing to think I will never be a home owner in the area I grew up in.

It's ridiculous in the NYC area. A modest 3BR house in Grand Rapids, MI will run you around $175k, depending on school district, lot size, etc. I <3 MI.
  • Housing is ridiculous here, the pricing is insane and there is no where you can escape it really, unless you head way out to the sticks. I'm in the sam eposition as Faeryluvr. And actually, When i originally was thinking of moving to salt lake to be closer to fiance, the head hunter there told me i wouldn't take a pay cut at all. but col is half of what it is here. And my best friend just moved up from houston, and acutally took a pay cut.

I am pretty jealous of your $400 a month rent actualy. Our rent just increased 7%. It was at 1250 already for a 600 sq. foot 1 bed apt.

But if that is high for the area, then I would maybe search around for a backup. I mean, don't have all your eggs in one basket so you won't be disappointed.

Most college towns are exactly as PP's said, because of supply and demand. Is the town over a possibility for you to move to?

A young couple in my building said that for what they pay in rent in our apt they could own a beautiful, new 4 bedroom house where they are from in MI. super jealous.

175,000 here gets you a hut that is a fixer upper with like 1/5 acre at best.

I'm willing to move out of state eventually. Where, I have no idea, but that's more than I can say for FI. He's too much of a NYer to go anywhere out of the metropolitan area. Maybe we'll just move to the other side of the river to NJ. Most of his family lives there anyway, and while it's not cheap, it's cheaper than Long Island. But we have plenty of time for that...

  • I watched house hunters the other day. They were in Austin and they were jugglng between this kind of smallish house, and then this really big nice house. they picked the smaller one, beacuse it was cheaper. Their monthly payment was 888.00
    I cried.

  • I agree partly on the COL however, I've seen one place here that advertises that "Make sure to tell your parents our prices so they will know to choose us!" Seriously, here, it really is the parents paying the students way and they get jobs for beer and shopping money. Also, DF's father is a landlord, that's how it's been on his homes too. The parents pay the rent to him too. They want their children here to study, not work full time.

We live in College Station, the COL is slowly going up. Average rent on a 2 bdr/1bath is $800 a month. On a house it's double that.

They also offer apartments and houses where students can rent a room for like $400 a month with all bills paid. They pair you up with roomates. It's pretty convient for students.

However, College Station is trying to become more family oriented. A lot of the students, as they graduate, they are deciding that they do not want to leave and want to stay and raise their families here. We are getting more and more congested. So the city is branching out further and further out. We have grown so much since I moved here back in 2004.
  • We were paying 1350/m for a 2 bed 1 bath apartment closer to Baltimore. It was tiny.

When I came over here to live, H knew that would drive me crazy - it was also in the ghetto and he didn't want to worry about me at night when he was at work.

We now rent a house in the sticks, 3 bed 3 bath for 1500/m. But, things are pretty tight still... COL is way too high here.

Texas is actually where we want to move to, and the chances of him taking a pay cut to go out there is pretty slim. So, even though I've heard it will be hot and the mosquitos are just as bad... I'm looking forward to possibly moving out there soon. He's so stressed about money here. :/

Yep! I see you pay $1,250. That is $400 more than my monthly mortgage and property tax escrow payment. I am in a 2 bed/1.5 bath 1,800 sq foot condo so I don't own land, but it is only 7 years old (was 3 years when I bought it in 2007) and decent. As I've posted here before, its layout is terrible for when we have a baby someday but we're going to make it work. My mortgage payment would be WAY lower if I had waited and bought this same condo this year as it's currently worth about $24,000 less than what I paid :(

Sounds like East Lansing, MI, where Michigan State University (my alma mater) is. Pretty normal for a college town, unfortunately.
  • Wow!  I am in Colorado and I pay $1315 a month (mortgage) for my 2bed/2bath condo (1300 sq feet).  We are looking to buy a house and ouir mortgage will almost double for a 3 bed 3 bath (with basement)... wow- I didn't realize how pricey Colorado is!

Well it depends on the length of your mortgage (15 or 30 years) and your interest rate. The easiest way to compare is to share the price of our homes but I'm not comfortable doing that.

Would be round San Antonio way. Mosquitos were bad out here, especially after the hurricane... I'd be bit like 10 times just going to the mailbox. After spraying with 40% deet bug spray.
