I understand the desire to wait until you're closer to your goal size.... just keep in mind that the longer you put off dress shopping, the more chance you'll need to purchase a dress off the rack.       I only had 7 months to plan a wedding and was just able to squeak in ordering in a new dress.  I selected one that only took approx 4 months (that was one of the quickest turn around times at my salon) and that still allowed enough time for alterations. 

Maybe start looking now, find the dress you love and ask the salon when the deadline would be to order it so it'll be in on time for your wedding?   Just please remember to order the dress based on the size you are at the time of ordering... not the size you *hope* to be!  Dresses can be taken in... but it's much harder to let them out

I'd definitely start looking. Probably the latest you'd want to order it is June. PP makes a great point about not ordering the size you hope to be, because trust me-that'll just make you more stressed if you don't fit into your dress.

You can start looking now.  Possibly even trying them on to see what styles you like on you.  Then you can probably wait a few more months to actually order.

I'm in a similar situation.  I'm going to go try on (and hopefully choose) the dress in a few weeks when I go back to my hometown.  However, I won't be ordering until summer (1 year before the wedding), because I want to be closer to my goal size.

I agree with PP that you should look now and get a general idea of the type of dress you like. You could even find the dress you want to purchase but wait a few months before doing so.

I would look now. I ordered my dress in June 2011 and I am still waiting for it to come.

I agree with PPs, it is a VERY good idea to start getting an idea of what you want now. Go to a couple of places and try on dresses, if you find one you love ask what the latest day to order would be!

I just placed the order for my dress this past weekend and my wedding is Sept 1st - the only reason I hadn't ordered it sooner was because I had been to the salon a couple of months ago and they assured me that they would be able to get any dress I wanted ordered in time.

I am likewise losing weight but still ordered for the size i am now. There's never any guarantees you'll lose more inches even if you are eating healthy and working out.

Start looking now - I  too am on the gown hunt. I have found it much harder then i had ever thought - ball gowns are just not as popular and i have a vision in my mind...  I am going to make my final choice on 3/3 out of the final 3 for a 10-11-12 weeding - I have talked to all of the shops as I try dresses on - and they say it will be 4-6 months and if i plan on losing more weight it is better to give them more time. I am a lil scared of the final take in alteration cost so i am including that in my budget- i would rather pay to have it custom fit then squeeze in or need to bay one last minute... as others have told me dont worry so much you will look amazing and beautiful on your day your

I think it depends on where you go. I was worried about that too. I went to David's Bridal to just look and ended up finding my dream dress. I was going to wait and order cause I am losing weight too. But I went ahead and ordered it. It came in within a month! So now it is hanging in my closet and it is going to have to be taken up for the wedding and it is still 7 months away. So if you decide to go look find out when it needs to be ordered by!
