NWR (sort of) - Tips for getting rid of an ex's ring?

So, I was engaged VERY young to a guy who was... not a very good fit (emotionally abusive, cheated constantly, used to tell me he was doing me a favor tolerating a naked fat chick while we were.... well, you get the point.) Luckily, common sense pitched in at some point and we never made it to the alter.

Luckily, the stars fell in place, and The Guy came back into my life, and he is... everything I could dream of from the man I'm spending my life with.

I offered my ex his engagement ring back repeatedly, and he told me he doesn't want it returned. So, I have decided to be rid of it and put that money towards my husband-to-be's wedding band. Any tips for getting a decent price for this thing and being done with it?

  • I went through this. Unfortunately with the economy the way it is, you won't get much back. I know for a fact that he payed $1200 for the ring, and every pawn shop I went to offered me about $75 for it, and they resell the same thing for $200. Even if you go with the cash for gold places, womens bands don't usually have that much gold in them, so you won't get much that way, either. I sold mine on ebay for $400. It's not $1200, but it paid for FI wedding band.

  • If you take it to Kays, they do diamonds for diamonds. I paid (yes you read that right) about $1100 for my old engagement ring. They took that off of my current ring so FI got me a pretty awesome ring pretty cheaply.

Now I know they only do 50% off but at least I felt the money wasnt wasted if you are looking at buying another ring. I think it is the only way to really get any value out of a ring if you are already planning on buying something else. You may also be able to use the extra on something else like diamond earrings or something for your wedding if there is any credit left over. Sure its a marketing scam but I got 1/2 kt diamond earrings and a 1 1/2 kt diamond ring for $1400.

  • I don't know where your old ring is from, but you might try a jewelry store that deals in estate stuff. Jewelry stores might tend to offer more for the gold and jewels, especially if they can take them apart to make new things or if your piece could be considered estate. My FI and I got my rings sized at a small local place and they seem to offer better deals.

  • as the girls said -  Kays does diamonds for diamonds but I dont think they mentioned that the ring does NOT have to be from Kays to do this.
