do you have a favorite holiday tradition? (NWR)

My family is pretty untraditional (and that is fine) but now that FI and I are starting our lives together, I thought it might be nice to start some traditions of our own.  My daughter and I always go out each year and buy an ornament that reminds us of something speical or something she was "into" that year.  And then I always buy us new PJ's (that we get to open on Xmas eve) so we have "nice" PJ's for pictures.

Is there anything you all do (or don't do) that has become a holiday tradition?

Re: do you have a favorite holiday tradition? (NWR)

  • We have a lot of traditions. I think one of my favorites though is that we have always made the same kind of cookies every year. It used to be that my mom would make everything and we would ice them, but as I've grown up, I now am the one who makes the cookies. I am currently in the middle of making 24 dozen cookies and then I'll make the icing on wenesday and we'll ice them then. FI's gonna help this year. :) always makes me happy.
  • My FI and I love picking out ornaments every year. The first year we were together, I bought him an "Our First Christmas" ornament and last year we bought a bunch. This year we didn't buy any, everyone else bought some for us. My FMIL got me a swarovski purse ornament, my grandma got me a gold ornament with flowers, my mom got me a snowflake ornament and my dad got me baking santa ornaments. I love them all :)

Other traditions that my FI and I have so far are: Going to a Christmas show each year like The Christmas Spectacular or The Nutcracker and going to Dylan's candy bar, making a gingerbread house, seeing the tree at Rockefeller center and seeing the windows decorated for christmas like Macys or Saks and watching Christmas movies while drinking hot chocolate.

  • My family has a bunch of traditions, one that FI and I have started is every year we go to the Nutcracker and then to a nice resturant.

  • Our family tradition is hosting a Christmas Eve party for the whole family. My mom started it when my brother and I were very young, and she still hosts the party to this day. I don't know how things will change if I ever have children or anything, but that's not for awhile. It's a nice holiday tradition that I look forward to. :)

It is so much fun! We dress up and just go out and have a great time! Haha usually we spend too much money and this year was no exception, but it's a once a year thing.

  • Our tradition is just our breakfast.  Everyone gets to my moms house at around 10 and the girls make bacon for sandwiches for breakfast to hold us over until dinner around 2 or 3.    We don't really have any others. :/

  • I always spend a day or two in the kitchen baking a ton of cookies (this year I plan on oatmeal cranberry, sugar cookies, apple caramel, those little pretzel things with the chocolate and m&ms, oreo truffles, "chubby hubby" truffles, cake batter fudge, and something pepperminty- perhaps bark?). I usually end up with more than enough goodies to share with both sides of family and compensate for all the ones that FI eats.

Another tradition is that every year FI and I each pick out an ornament for the tree and the first year we lived together we bought a little picture frame ornament and put that at the top of the tree.

<div>That sounds like my dad's breakfast! He makes eggs and bacon and/or sausage and buttered italian bread every Xmas morning after we've opened presents.Incredibly unhealthy and heavy, hah. It's the kind of breakfast my family would <em>never</em> have during the year. (My mom never bought bacon or sausage and fried eggs are almost a strictly Xmas day thing, lol.) </div><div>
</div><div>We don't really have any traditions of our own yet. I bake every Xmas and this year I actually got my Xmas cards out, which is progress! We'll see what we start on our own; frankly, I can't wait to get our tree- it's going to be our first <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" /></div>

  • Every year on Christmas Eve we go 'Christmas Light Insulting', as my mom calls it. We drive around and look at people decorations, admire the pretty ones, and make fun of the tacky ones (I'm from a mean family :)) We listen to Christmas Carols on the radio, but my dad never actually sings the words, he just says 'five golden rings' over and over to the tune of whatever is on.  I <3 my family.
  • My parents always did pj's on Christmas Eve and FI and I have carried that into our lives now because I loved it so much. Then last year when FI and I moved in together we started opening our stockings on Christmas Eve so that the next morning we can dive straight into the big presents. Also we start cooking on Christmas Eve so that everything will be ready for lunch on Christmas Day.
  • We have tons of traditions.

i'm trying to teach my H to "get" Christmas Stockings.  He just never did them in his family.  They just got gobs of gifts from Santa.  I like Stocking gifts bests because they're usually silly little things like fun socks, candy, fruity lip glosses, maybe a CD, stuffed animals..  just good old fun.
