Plus-Sized

Please help!!

I love my MOH dearly and want her to feel as beautiful as I think she is. We've gone dress shopping a couple of times so far and have yet to find something that fits well enough or that she feels comfortable in. I hate to share sizes because I know how sensitive it is, but I guess I can say she's well endowed and fits in the Women's sizes. Our problem thus far has been finding something that will give her enough support and not make her breasts the center of attention but can help minimize I suppose and look flattering everywhere else. The dresses at DB seem to be made exclusively for smaller women because even when she tries on sizes that should fit her, they still have a waist built in that just cuts her in half and is not flattering at all. I don't know what style is best suited for a fuller figure and I don't want this to be an embarrassing experience for her :( What can I do? Is there somewhere online that caters to the larger sizes? I've looked at Dress Barn so far and a lot of their dresses just don't work for a wedding. Please help me help her!

She might have to buy a larger size and have the other areas taken in. I had to do that for my wedding dress to accomodate my bust. I am typically a street size 14/16, but my bust is BIG. Most wedding gowns in about an 18 fit me fine everywhere but the bust. I bought a size 20 wedding dress, and had to have the waist and hips area taken in. Your MOH might need to consider doing that.

For styles, try to avoid anything with an empire waist and choose something with straps. The empire waist will typically cut right across the bust for those of us who are well endowed. I don't know if you are looking for long or short, but here are a few options:

this first choice looked great on my busty BM, and she was able to wear a regular bra with it.

    http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Sleeveless-Satin-Gown-with-Ruched-Overlay-85060_Bridal-Party-Bridesmaids-Long-Bridesmaid-Dresses

With these halter styles, consider buying a 6 way bra, the kind where she can wear it as strapless, or with a halter strap.

    http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Sleeveless-Satin-Dress-Scoop-Halter-Neckline-81594_Bridal-Party-Bridesmaids-Short-Bridesmaid-Dresses

For these two, she would have to buy a larger size and have it altered down, since the rouching directly under the bust would likely cut into her bust.

Also, consider non-bridesmaids dresses. Look at Macys, JcPenney, and other department stores in their cocktail style dresses.
  • Do you have more than one BM? None of my bridesmaids are tiny, but one of my ladies is plus size and she hated every dress at David's. We found a great dress at Macy's that she really liked. It covered her bust and had straps that could hide her bra.
You don't get as many color options, but you get better constructed dresses for your money. Macy's has coupons all the time.
  • Thank you ladies, I sure appreciate it!!

  • Check out Alfred Angelo - they have a wonderful selection and I feel like they take larger sizes into account as well. I had a great experience trying on dresses there.

  • My MOH and bridesmaids are all different sizes and shapes but we found Alfred Angelo dresses were flattering on all of them
  • This may or may not work depending on what colors you are going with. But David's Briadal has mix and match options. Pick a skirt style & then a top style and the tops range in styles from strapless, halter & few others.. If they have a color that will work for you then she could order a larger top then bottom which may make it easier.

  • I know people hate on David's Bridal, Their stuff is sized down, But my MOH is.... well she's bigger than me and I'm a big girl, we found her a dress that looks amazing on her, and the rest of my BMs, who are all a LOT smaller than both of us, at the same time. It holds in her bust, made her feel pretty (What I wanted) and, as she so gleefully exclaimed when she tried it on, "IT HAS POCKETS!"

    Nic.
