Getting a dress

Hi everyone,

So my wedding is 12/12/12 and I still haven't gotten a dress. I keep putting it off because I have been losing weight (still not as much as I wanted to lose)  and don't want to have too many alterations. I know I'm going through David's Bridal.  I'm planning on going the end of October and then maintaining my weight.  Is that too late? Has anyone else waited until almost the last minute to get a dress?

Re: Getting a dress

  • I know many ladies order them six months to a year in advance. I ordered mine online from DB and it came a week later. I guess some places make them to order and some you get them basically off the rack. My guess would be that the longer you wait, the more limited your choices MIGHT be. You do know that a dress can be altered quite a bit, right? I doubt the difference in your size over the next few weeks would present much of a problem. Also, everyone says DB alterations are horribly expensive, so you might check around. Good luck and congrats on weight loss!
  • I got my prom dress from DB many moons ago. Their alteration prices are through the roof. So, if you have any inkling that you may lose weight by the time the dress gets back, I would totally avoid them! The alterations to take in my prom dress was almost $400 for a hem and to have it taken in, seriously ridiculous. I got my wedding gown from Alfred Angelo. I ordered it in June and it came in Monday. Now it's too big and I'll have to have it taken in. They quoted me for the hem, bustle and taking it in for $250. Another thing is, maybe find another seemstress around your area. Not the in-house DB one. I wouldn't wait until last minute since it really varies how soon a dress could come in and it's just less stressful on yourself to know that you'll have everything you need on time. At Alfred Angelo average is 4 months. Alterations are a minimum of 8 weeks.

  • you should go look/order NOW.  Some DB dresses arrive in a week. Some can take up to 3 months, depending on the style and how new the design is.  Chances are, in 2 months, you might lose 20 pounds.  The dress can typically easily be altered to accomodate a 20 pound weight loss.
