NWR Advice Needed

So, I was offered a third teaching position for the fall.  I already have two lined up (M/W - 5-6:30 and T/Th - 6-9).  The new position would be M/W - 8-10:30.  It's lecture on Monday, lab on Wednesday and is only 9 students.  It's also only about 15 minutes from my home (a local community college).  The money would go a long way towards paying off some debt.I'm seriously considering doing it.  I don't have a wedding to plan and the only major things that we're working on is TTC.  Do you think it would be too stressful to do all three on top of my full time job?  Would you take it?

I think it depends on how much you like teaching! For me, I'd be a huge stress to be working an extra 4-ish hours some evenings. However, if it was something I enjoyed more, it wouldn't be bad at all (I can easily spend 3-5 hours in the evening working on my Etsy shop no problem!). So I think you just need to figure out first if you want to do it, and then how much of your lives it will disrupt - dinner together, etc

Hmm.  I would probably do it.  The only think that would annoy me is how late it is.  Would there be any overlap material for the 3 or would you need completely separate lesson plans/materials/lectures, etc.

Jen - I love teaching.  It's usually have so much fun.  That's why I think a class of 9 students would be exciting (as opposed to the 40 I will see earlier on Mondays). KR - The early classes overlap material completely, even though they are at two different schools.  If they were two different subjects, I wouldn't even consider it.I have a meeting on Wednesday morning to see the school's facilities.  DH says he doesn't mind, that it's 100% my decision.

Given what you've shared so far, I would do it.  If the money is worth and you don't think you'd be too exhausted from it, go for it.  Since the one night is a lab, will that give you some flexibility to be working on other things (lesson prep, etc.) at the same time (ie, be in the lab to help if students have Q's, but pretty much do your own thing sometimes)?

I would do it, if it were me.  I figure; you're only young once so you might as well do it now, before kids and such.  But that's just me.

Hi Morgan,I've never posted to you before--but I thought I'd offer a fresh opinion.  As a fellow teacher, the main questions for me would be how similar the new class is to those I'm already teaching and how much extra work I'd have, past the initial planning.  Nine students seems like a manageable class size, and if you're familiar with the information to be taught, I'd say go for it!  :)

I also say to go for it, after reading your thoughts and other responses. Yay for more $!

Also keep in mind that this would mean seeing DH less... I know he travels a lot- so it might be hard not seeing him as often.  I dunno- if thats not a huge issue, I would do it if you would enjoy it.  You are one coveted teacher!

I'm a night person, so I would love to teach an 8-10:30 class. That said, I've looked into adjunct teaching and for me to pick up a class, it was only 1k or so. To me, that isn't worth it (this was for a once per week class). But if the money is better than that, then I'd say yes. (I only have a M.S., so I don't make as much money as a PhD, obv.)Is this only for the fall semester?Do you ever let your students out early for the evening class? Most of my profs tended to in grad school because everyone (including the teacher and the students) had already worked a full day. So we'd skip a break and just work right through to go home a little earlier.Lastly, if you do TTC, do you think you will be super tired during your first trimester? That could make teaching at night hard. I would do it in general, esp. if you plan to pay off "bad" debt (like a car or CC). To accelerate my mortgage or student loans, I wouldn't, if that makes any sense. :)
