Plus-Sized

Article regarding strapless dresses

Its been awhile since I wrote a post. I have been really busy with wedding planning and work. Go Figure!

I was surfing online today and I came across this article. I wish I hadn't read it because now I am worried I won't look good in my dress.

I am a "plus-size" girl who chose a strapless gown. I did try on ones with straps or halters but I ended up picking one that flattered my waist and one that I felt the best in.

My wedding is in eight days...lol

  • I kinda read it. I say wear what fits, flatters and makes you feel beautiful, no matter what someone else says.
  • Great article. I too chose sleeves. Now I am second guessing. Maybe the strapless would have flattered my short waist more.

  • I am torn between a strapless and a halter top dress.
  • I wasn't planning to get a strapless dress. My top 3 choices on paper were a halter and two off-the-shoulder styles. They all looked awful on me. The off-the-shoulders made me look like I had football pads on. The halter made me look much bigger around the middle.

Then I tried on two different strapless dresses and they both looked so much better. I think I look smaller all around in the strapless and I (and my mom or sister) didn't notice any back or shoulder bulge. The one I ended up with was one I didn't expect to like.

I agree with PP, wear what you feel beautiful in. The fact is that strapless gowns aren't universally flattering, but they aren't universally UNflattering either. Every person is different. I'm a size 18/20, but my shape is a lot different that a friend of mine, who is about the same size.
  • I had a strapless gown. I added cap sleeves later.
  • I love my strapless gown.  It may date our generation of wedding pictures like sleeves and big bows did previous generations, but that doesn't bother me.

Many of the complaints the writer had, back fat, armpit fat, dress not staying up, can all be remedied by having the dress correctly altered.  She even says she is broad shouldered and small chested, which don't necessarily work well with a strapless style.

Not everyone always likes what is in fashion at the time.  I doubt I will ever own skinny jeans because they do not work with my figure.  Other people, no matter the size they wear, will look better in them than me, but that doesn't mean I go around calling them universally unflattering.

I feel halter tops really emphasize and draws attention to the shoulders.  If you have well defined shoulders, go for it.  Otherwise I think strapless looks better.  Just my opinion.
  • Seems to me that the author of the article has a personal problem with strapless dresses. I am plus sized and having a beach wedding so strapless it will be. I am working my arms to firm them a little but I am who I am and my family loves me. Im gonna look great and so will you.Cool

    BTW, congrats and enjoy

  • I'm getting married in 6 days in a strapless dress, so for that reason I refuse to click on the link :)

  • I read the article and still have no doubts about my strapless gown.  I strongly disagree with the author, the strapless gown is very flattering on many body types.  I think strapless gowns are a classic look, that show off the most beautiful parts of a woman; her shoulders, back, neck, and collarbone.  Personally, I LOVE my collar bone and shoulders, when I tried on a halter it covered them up, my strapless shows them off beautifully.

  • Meh, I love my strapless dress- I feel beautiful and I know it's gonna knock my FI's socks off when he sees it! I don't care what other people think and I think everyone else needs to just find something they're comfortable in and forget the fashion police.

  • I just assumed I would have to get a strapless dress based on what the styles are right now...I was wrong though! My perfect dress ended up having straps and I love it!

  • I personally think strapless gowns are beautiful on fuller figured women. Not to mention if you feel beautiful and confident in something it will show.  I agree with PP that said if the alterations are done correctly there will not be any "hangover" at the top of the gown.  I wouldn't trade my strapless gown for anything.

That was the most ridiculous article ever.  Fashion is fashion, and not everyone will like it.  And if it's nto flattering on one, apparently very opinionated, person, doesn't mean it's a conspiracy!  LOL

I love my strapless gown, and even though I only have an average bust size, it stays up just fine.
  • A bride should wear what she feels good in. Period. Regardless of what anyone has to say about what "looks good" on a specific body type. My arms are in no way shape or form "toned" but I am getting married in July and any dress I would choose would fail to cover them up completely. My dress is strapless and I feel completely perfect in it. Rock your strapless dress, if you feel confident you will look good. :)
  • wear what you feel most beautiful in! who care what "society" thinks.... if you feel beautiful... that is all that matters.. One of my BM's is a plus size girl. she is REFUSING to wear a strapless dress that I reall want the girls to wear... and it think they will look beautiful....you will be georgous.. the person who wrote that article... has her own demons she is dealing with, don't let them become yours!
    enjoy your day!
  • Thank you all ladies. It turned out to be a beautiful day. I wore my strapless gown and received many compliments on it. I thought I looked fab!
