It doesn't feel like Christmas yet. :/

Not sure exactly. what it is... well, more its a multitude of things. I did all my Christmas shopping so far online. We don't have an awful lot of decorations this year, and the cat keeps knocking them down so the dog can eat them. I miss my family.

Think I'm going Christmas shopping tomorrow with a friend of ours to finish his stocking - maybe seeing all the decorations out at the mall and good company will help some.

(Not saying that H isn't good company. But, Christmas is my favourite holiday, and, as a long time batchelor, he's pretty set in his ways about what he wants to do, and he's pretty stubborn). I'll let him do what he wants for now... but he was the one who said we should make our own traditions this Christmas... I'll enforce one of my family's (no computers on Christmas Day) and hopefully it'll be a fun time. :)

Anyone else not feeling the Christmas spirit? Or have tips on how to get into it? :)

Re: It doesn't feel like Christmas yet. :/

  • I understand. It's been difficult to get into the spirit this year for me, too, and I LOVE Christmas. I have to spend my entire winter break studying for some pretty major exams, so that's really just bringing me down. Studying for 3 hours a day really really blows.

I'm thinking I'll get more into the spirit once we head towards home on Thursday to spend Christmas with my family. I'm lucky because FI and I spend holidays with my family, so I usually feel in the spirit once I get home and see the decorated house. Also, it helps that FI and I decorated our little apartment with our tree, wrapped some gifts, hung stockings, and play Christmas music and/or watch Christmas movies when we can.

Maybe start a new tradition with your FI - watch one Christmas movie every night until Christmas Eve for this week. It's pretty easy since ABC Family has the 25 days of Christmas on and usually plays Christmas movies, and Walmart (over here in MI) sells Christmas classics for about $5 a piece, so it's pretty inexpensive. You could always start a Christmas movie collection (buy a new movie every year) and turn that into a tradition... it's just an idea!

Hopefully you'll get more into the spirit as it gets closer. Going to the mall and spending time with friends will definitely help. :)

  • for me, Christmas music helps. it's on in our apartment most of the time and always when i'm in the car.
are there any decorations you haven't tried? i know cats can get anywhere, but do you have a wreath on the door, and stockings on the mantle/wall? for me, the littlest things make a huge difference

  • For me, biggest thing is my baking day :) I put on Christmas music and spend an entire day or two in the kitchen :) Then when I have 6 different kinds of goodies I really feel in the spirit.

  • Well, we have a little tree up with a few lights, we have a few stockings (ours and the animals). I'm just used to my mum going heavy on decorations... no place untinseled, no picture un-hollyed.

I like the Christmas movie idea. I suggested watching one tonight but he wanted to watch the end of the series of Prison Break we're on (that we've been watching at least two episodes of a day since we began watching it - netflix) so I figure I'll wait and settle in on Christmas Day with movies. His family had the tradition of watching National Lampoon, and mine Santa Claus the movie, and he said tonight he wants to wait til Christmas for that. Maybe he's giving me license to bombard him with Christmas then? ;)

This is the first Christmas I've spent away from my family so I guess it was always going to be a little bittersweet to me, and while I know I can ring them at any time its not quite the same.

It was kind of funny really... the cat and dog like to pretend they don't get on, but they really tagteamed the other day. I took the car and went to the drs, was gone two hours (they were really disorganised)... I come back to H in a bad mood and two very guilty looking animals, some killed decorations and a dead makeup brush, which the cat had plucked from my makeup bag, not disturbing anything else, and brought it downstairs for the dog to play with.

Poor dog, wasn't really his fault in the end. ;)
  • I am trying to get into the spirit as well.  I am sitting here watching National Lampoons Christmas right now.  My FI is sleeping because he works graveyards and has to go to work at 10pm.
My granddaughters came over last night and helped us to decorate the tree.  My 7 week old kitten is really trying to undecorate it though!  My oldest granddaughter spent the night and we did some baking but still no Christmas spirit!  I think I am just tired.  I am lucky my kids, grandkids and mother all live with 15 miles.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

  • I am trying so hard to find it, because I love Christmas, but I am so stressed out still! I work as a music teacher in 5 schools, and I have concerts at all of them. I have one left, so I'm hoping that I will be able to get more into it when that is over. The other issue for me is that I have to work until Thursday this year- usually we get more days before Christmas than that, so I do all my preparations then. I'm having to squeeze them into my evenings on top of everything else I do.

We have a beautiful Christmas tree in the living room, and lights around the door, and stockings hung on the bar with care =) I hope I can enjoy it all when work is over for the year.

I know I'll love making new traditions with H this year; I've been so looking forward to doing our own little Christmas first thing Christmas morning before the family celebrations begin.

  • We're getting our tree this week! It will be our first tree together and just yesterday we finished putting up our stockings. For me, I think it's the lights that really get me in the spirit. I'm not much of a Xmas movie watcher or a shopper but I love the lights! Last week I played all my Trans-Siberian Orchestra music on my ipod (absolutely infectious for me, much more so than most of stuff that typically plays in the mall.) I'm not too crazy about the holidays but I can't wait to give him his presents and make some goodies for handing out!

  • Lights on the trees...

Remember in Home Alone 2 when she's searching NY for her son... right by that tree is where you'd find me too. I wasn't that keen on NY when we went but for Christmas lights... yeah, I'd visit again. :)
  • We don't have ANY decorations up at our apartment, but the company I work for has been doing Christmas stuff since JUNE so I definitely get enough of it there.

It's hard to celebrate Xmas for me because it's FI's birthday...so I am kind of in the mindset of "Whatever he wants he gets" for his birthday. Doesn't help that this year my entire family is going to Illinois to visit my older sister so I'm going to be left with JUST FI's family - slightly depressing.

  • I know for me, it still doesn't really feel like Christmas, but that is my fault.  I have been doing wedding stuff with any free time I have.

We have a new kitten who is into everything so instead of putting up my good Christmas tree and ornaments, we just put up a little 4 foot tree with plastic ornaments.  That way when they (we have 2 cats) knock stuff off the tree (or even knock the tree over- yes it has happened) it isn't that big of a deal.

I agree Xmas music helps alot!
