Grooms cakes popular??

Hi girls! I love cake, and even though I want our cake to be extravagent and gorgeous, I also kind of want a grooms cake. BUT... I've never ever seen one in this area and I've been to a lot of weddings! I wasn't sure if it was a popular thing in other areas but not so much in PA since we have cookie tables, or if I just happen to be missing them? I was thinking if it's not super popular around here and no one would really enjoy it as much as I would I could serve it at the RD and maybe suprise FI with it?? Just wondering if any of you (mostly small towns outside of Pitts) are having groom's cakes or have seen them alot??

I've seen them frequently. I didn't do one myself, but I think they are pretty popular in PGH, but not as popular as in the south. Certainly not unheard of though! :)

Wow really??? What kind have you seen? I'm thinking like... a really unique one like ones on Cake Boss and Ace of Cakes, but something that would mean a lot to him. Or do most couples just do like a chocolate tiered cake or something?? Sorry I'm clueless! haha

I did one at the RD and had it designed to look like his car (that thing is like his baby!). Definitely not unheard of!

I was at a wedding this weekend and there was a grooms cake (ice cream cake!) Some people serve them at the RD too.

I had a groom's cake, but I served it at the RD, because we were having a dessert buffet at the wedding. It was a surprise for DH and he loved it!

I am doing one for the RD. It is a super-hero version of our guinea pig chewing on FI's favorite comic book. Here's where I am getting it from: http://www.sugarnspires.com/cake/gallery.php

n--If you posted what you finally decided about the groom's cake, I must have missed it, so I wanted to tell you i think that idea is awesome! If I had given any thought and planning to actually doing one, I probably would have done a groom's cake of our hamster driving FI's Jeep. Great idea!

Aw thanks! I'm excited about it. Our piggy has pics on FB if anyone wants to see him. Hamster driving the Jeep = awesome!

I suprised DH with a groom's cake at the wedding- it was right on the cookie table. It was a Texas Hold'Em- themed cake. I have an inspiration pic in my bio if you're interested. His godmother (who also made our wedding cake) made it, and it turned out fabulous! I think groom's cakes are lots of fun, so I say go for it! Nuelsi and Colleen- those cake ideas are awesome!!

Oh I'm glad to hear lots of you have done it! It seems like you're all towards the bigger city area, but I'm sure I could pull it off here. I like the idea of either the Casino style cake, or maybe a Puggle to look like his (our) dog that he's in love with!
