Portland Press Herald, really?

I just looked up how to get out engagement announcement posted in the papers where FI and I each are from (Portland for me, York for him) and here where we live now (Dover NH).  It looks like I can announce in Dover, Portsmouth and York all for free.  PPH charges over $2 a line PLUS $40 to include a picture!!!  Seriously?  The instructions say it can cost anywhere between $20 and $200 to post this!  Clearly, my next step is the good old American Journal...

That is a little bit ridiculous.  We did it anyway--ours printed in this weekend's paper

Despite the fact that I've never been fond of the PPH for so many reasons that involve their desire to squeeze money out of every possible opportunity....... It is pretty well-known that newspapers have been fighting like crazy to stay afloat since the dawn of television news channels and the internet. Maybe you could see it as helping to save some jobs?

Yep - we paid over $100 for ours.

And that is a huge reason why we didn't put our engagement announcement in the papers! :-)That... and not wanting solicitations from vendors.

Yeah, I thought that was unfortunate too, but as someone who works in the newspaper industry, unfortunately even charging people $200 for engagement announcements isn't enough to keep a lot of papers afloat. That being said, I probably still won't do it....FI and I don't live in Portland anyways, and it's free for our local paper.
