first gift arrived!!

I can't believe it, but we got our first wedding gift this week!!  The wedding is not until October, but a cousin of mine in California sent a gift already!!  This may sound silly, but it's a super-cool toaster from BB&B!!  I want to use it NOW, but my FI said we have to wait until after the wedding.  I think it's because he's jealous and wants to use it and we have two separate homes.  What's the rule on using gifts before the wedding?  Can I unpack it and make some awesome toast??  :-)

Technically, you're not supposed to use the gifts before the wedding because if, for some reason, the wedding is called off, you're supposed to return the gift to the giver.

I've also heard it's bad luck (if you believe in that kind of thing).

I've been told to check things to make sure they are not broken, then set them aside until we are married.

Bummer, I was afraid of that!  I'll listen to the bad luck thought - I certainly don't need any of that!  :-)

In addition to what hcorrigan said, you're supposed to write a thank you note when you get the gift.

We've been checking gifts to make sure they're not broken and then putting them up in the attic (although it's hard to tell what's meant as an engagement gift versus a shower gift or a wedding gift).  A tiny confession is that we got two cookbooks off our registry, and FI wants to use them, so they are on our cookbook shelf right now instead of in the attic with the other gifts.  We haven't used them yet, though.

ETA: I realized that last part might sound like FI wants to use the cookbooks and I'm all proper etiquette.  That's not the case :)

Yes a thank you note went out right away.  I agree that it's hard to tell whether this is a wedding gift or an engagement gift.  Nothing was said in the note and we know they will be coming to the wedding in October.

Okay, I'll be good and put it aside.  I really didn't know that was the case.  It makes sense.  I guess now I'll have to apologize to my FI for giving him such a hard time. :-)

    Thank ladies!!

As much as I want to use the silly toaster, I'm a complete traditionalist and don't want to jinx myself.  We will spend the night before the wedding apart and will not see each other until I'm walking down the aisle.  I'll miss him for that18 hours, but it makes it all the more exciting for me!  :-)
