How does this sound?

So the photographer emailed me back, didn't respond about my date and said we could discuss it in person. I'm already adjusting our budget because decent photographers down there are so much more expensive, but that's ok. FI and are looking it over later this week to see what our absolute max would be total and going from there. I figured I would let her come with her number, we'd come with ours and go from there. For ours, the pack I want is 3g, but includes a bunch of stuff we don't want. If we subract that and divide by the time difference, we're looking at 1800, which is still more than I wanted to spend but much easier to afford. I'm going to make a list of prints I'm going to want to see what the total will be in the grand scheme of things.

Re: How does this sound?

  • It sounds good to me, but will depend on if the photog works independently or for a larger company. I know ours was willing to work with us on a few things because she works for herself and makes basically what she wants to.
  • sounds good but weird that wont say if available on your date or not but wants to meet first lol
  • I hate to say it but admist my photography shopping each time I asked about lower pricing / print options I was basically told no and that their packages are based on "already popular choices". It wasn't until I found our photographer that we were finally happy with the packages. Hopefully you have a better experience and are happily surprised! May the photography gods be with you hehe

  • I doubt they'll be willing to almost halve the package, but you can ask. At least around here, the photographers are booked every weekend, so why would they do a $1800 wedding when they can get a $3000 wedding?

We worked with our photographer to get the package we wanted by getting rid of features we didn't need to add features we wanted, while staying at the original price. They were not willing to lower it at all.

It's a time difference.  She has less expensive packs, but I want printing rights in addition to buying prints.  Her least expensive "investment" is $1000.  The pack I want to adjust is 8 hrs with a CD and printing rights, + engagement session +  a mounted 16x20.  Its the only one with printing rights so its the only one I can really use to base my numbers off of.  A la carte the E-pics are $100, the 16x20 is $225 (or $175 on sale - so we'll just call it $200).  $3000 - $100 - $200 is $2700, or $337.50 per hour x 5 hours is $1687.50 + the $100 for the epics session back in there is $1787.50.  She'd still be getting paid essentially the same per hour of photography & editing, I just need her for 5 instead of 8.

She said she was willing to work out something custom with us, so I'm eager to hear what she says.  I'd be happy if we could even work out a deal where I can get printing rights only of photos I buy physical prints of.  The a la carte price she quoted me of $50 per picture was way out of my price range - especially considering her package she lists with full printing rights is $3k.

Well, I also mentioned we hadn't actually booked anything yet because we're waiting to hear back from a few VIPs on the whole non-Saturday wedding thing.  There's no sense in sending in paperwork and reserving everything if I'm going to have to change it next week.  So I'm not super alarmed by that at all.

  • I did this with 5 photog's before I selected my current one.  I told them my budget and what price it would be if we took out  x, y, and z. Many of them give me their min price for capturing a wedding and told me what it would include. Maybe it the area I am in...

  • Also, her $1000 package is 5 hours of shooting + an e-session.  She's already going to be editing the photos I'm ordering prints of anyways, so I'd be giving her an extra $800 to edit the rest of the pictures she took that I didn't buy prints of.  I haven't come up with a number yet, but I'd obviously expect to pay less if we can work out something where I can only get rights to ones I buy physical copies of, since she'll already have completed all associated work.  It's not like I'm going to go to Wal*Mart or kinkos and print of sheets and sheets of photos, its just if I want to buy stationery from VP or have our picture engraved into glass or stone for home decor or buy my parents one of those goofy picture throw things then I don't want to have to worry about breaking copyright laws.  I'm buying prints from her and the things that I would print are things that I wouldn't buy through her anyways - I'd just not have them and be pissed off about it.
