The details

I figured there has to be at least ONE other bride out there like me who is having this dilemma/idea storm.

My mother seems to keep getting upset whenever we talk about wedding planning. No it isn't about budget, it doesn't have to do with the guest list, it isn't even intergrating-family drama.

She gets upset when I talk about the details.

The discussion of a late night snack, went straight to a fight. Mentionining ringing bells instead of throwing something, I got this sort of nondescript sinking into a coma response. Incorporating 'A Dream is A Wish Your Heart Makes' into the ceremony? I get lectured about "putting on a production".

Eventually I asked her why she was harshing my wedding buzz (in not so brusque a tone) and it turns out that the details were overwhelming her and now we have an understanding that I am going to get hit with inspiration every now and then and talk about it, but it doen't mean that its going to happen, set in stone, go find little silver bells on amazon.

This isn't a thread so much to complain about my mother (haha), but do you find this happening to you? What are your fun details? Or are you a completely goal oriented bride who won't touch the details until the big things are out of the way?

Re: The details

  • Sorry to hear about your motherly woes. Both my parents and my FMIL are on board with everything Ive mentioned and have even thrown in some neat ideas of their own. As far as details, Ive kept everything in a binder and on my laptop so when it comes down to it I have everything that I like..its just a means of narrowing stuff down that will be budget friendly for everyone AND still has eye appeal. Im a very do it now, not later, type of person so I couldnt imagine waiting to do everything. All my big stuff is basically booked and done and I think its all the little details that bring it all together. Not to sound rude but are you sure your mom doesnt have reservations toward your wedding? Maybe you can put her in charge of something small like favors or ceremony music and see how she responds to that. Sometimes it could be something simple like her wanting a little say in your planning. Hth!

  • I'm actually a little bit of the opposite right now - completely stuck on the little things! We have decided on our colors and overall feel and such, but other than picking out songs (which has been on my mind lately) for the various entrances/exits, I have no idea about the little details!

  • One of the best pieces of harsh truths I've read on TK is: no one will care about your wedding as much as you.

Maybe your mom is just getting burnt out from talking wedding details.  Make sure you fit in some non-wedding discussions when you spend time with eachother.

I use a notebook to jot down all of my idea in too, and I can tell you that my "little details" have evolved a lot over the past year since I started doing research for our wedding.

Oh, and we love little details.  We and oo and ah over them and like to spin off ideas when we can ;)  Feel free to share all of them with us.

Personally, I can't book until 1 yr out (almost there!) so I haven't been able to focus on anything but the little details thusfar.  There's still a lot we haven't finalized, but there's a lot of researched (google + pinterest!), priced out, & crossed off of the list.

One of my favorite details I've picked up thusfar: I got these bracelets at JCP on clearance for a dollar.  I'm going to take the locket off of the bracelet and attach one to FI's bout and one to my bouquet with a photo of my grandmother and his grandfather in it.  We both had a grandparent that was like +1 parent to us that died while we were in HS.

Personally, I loved FI's reaction of "I AM NOT WEARING THAT" when he thought I was talking about the bracelet, and not just the locket.

  • Getting2Vowels: No offense taken! The funny thing about this wedding is that I really am a "less is more" type girl, I would have been fine with a small gathering of family and close friends. My mom and aunt (like a second mother, both advantageous and trying) were the one who first came to me wanting me to look at wedding halls and suggesting a 250+ guest list. The conclusion I came to after talking with her is that 1) we're different people, she wants the venue of reception and ceremony decided before even thinking about centerpieces and table cards, and 2) she was a little overwhelmed that these were things that even needed to be thought about at this time. With planning in general I think one of the main problems I've run into is that my mom and aunt have VASTLY different tastes from me, and while they want this to be my wedding, my thoughts, my ideas, they still want to put their two cents in. That's how somehow I ended up with a dollar dance to fit in my evening, something I had never heard of until my uncle mentioned it. I think its a little bit like wanting to play dress-up with your daughter. What woman doesn't like to plan a wedding? :3

To all in general, I think that weddings have come a long way in even the past 10 or 20 years. The whole booking venues a year in advance, ordering dresses 8-6 months in advance, it can all be very overwhelming, especially since its all on your dime. My whole family is enjoying planning and talking a lot more, I think it was a bit of a shock at first though.
Some more misc. details: Many of the flowers at my wedding will indeed be origami.

There will also be a lot of paper stars. A LOT.

And we're going to have my students (I teach piano and voice) sing in the ceremony. :3

  • thanks i appreciate it... just not sure of some stuff anymore
  • My mom is the opposite, now.  At first she wasn't into any aspect of the wedding, but about two weeks ago she called me and told me she was "ready to be excited about it".  Now she is TOTALLY into the little details, like making a pretty seating chart, and planning a home made dessert buffet (she's town-famous for her biscotti).

Give her some time, maybe take her to look at some vendors with you? That's all it took for my mom to get on board.

Flutter is right, not everyone is excited about our weddings as much as we are, especially at the year point. I went thru this with a few people who told me "oh, you have so much time". But like you said, the reality is things will move fast and most things have to be booked sooner than later. What has helped for me is my notebook, which serves as my binder for ideas and thoughts, and finding a board on the knot that you love and is active. We are thinking "wedding", you know? Shoot those conversations at knotties for a while when you are planning. Your mom might like final or near to final decisions as well. Maybe talk lightly with her on near to final thoughts and issues. Then she'll come along when she is ready. I'm loving my planning and love keeping my excitement up about our wedding. My fav detail is the dyi projects. I've enjoyed shopping for things, creating mocks and sharing on TK/ my mom. I just did our alphabeth framed art guest book! I am super into the details. I feel I will have too much on my plate and will fell overwhelmed in 6 months with the wedding, moving, and job searching, plus giving my 100% to my current job. It's working best for me and my vendors and family are always super impressed. Happy planning!
