Hair/Make Up

I just started looking into this and wanted to get a feel of what other brides are doing. How much are you paying for hair/make up?
Are they coming to you or you going to the salon?
When is your trial and how much did you pay?

I was thinking it would be nice to do my trial for my bridal shower but I'm nervous since that is the middle of July. I don't want to be stuck at the end of July with no make up/hair if something goes wrong.

I'm not the type that goes to the salon and gets my hair done, so I don't even have a fall back. I mean worse comes to worse, I could have a BM do my hair/make up I guess...

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Re: Hair/Make Up

  • My trial is the 29th of this month at their salon, although for the wedding I'm having them come to me. The trial is $100. Hair is $60-$75 and makeup is $75. I'm only booking with them if I'm satisfied with the trial, so that's why I'm doing it this early.
    Anniversary
  • My sister (BM) works in cosmetics and has offered to do my make up as well as the make up for all the girls for free, which is super helpful! As for my hair, I have booked my old hairdresser, whom I love. She has agreed to drive the hour, I pay gas, to come to where the wedding is and will do us all. For mine it's $75, BM's $65, short hair and FG's $50. Unfortunately I can't do a trial with her because I live on the other side of the country now but I know she's great so I'm not overly worried and I've been sending her pic's of what I like.
  • Fortunately I have alot of friends in the beauty industry so a friend of mine that is a professional makeup artist (and is AMAZING) is doing my makeup as a gift and a friend is doing my hair as well. Im going to talk to the girl doing my hair and one other cosmetologist friend and see if they will come to the house and do the BMs hair for  a set price.
Coming from someone who as worked in a salon and is an aspiring cosmetologist i would say that July would be fine for a trial, but if you are super picky i would make an appointment with a different stylist after your first trial as a backup, as well as a backup appointment the day of. That way if you are pleased with your trial you can just cancel the other 2 appointments.

I haven't picked a person yet but I am definitely having them come to me. We did our e-pics yesterday and I went to get my hair/makeup done and it ended up being really stressful running around to get that and some other last minute things done, so I'm definitely avoiding that next time.

I'm planning on doing my trial run on the same day as my bridal portraits to kill two birds with one stone.

The prices that I'm finding are about $250-350 including airbrushed makeup, hair, and a trial run. So. much. freaking. money.
    Anniversary
  • The stylist I was planning on using e-mailed me today and said they were no longer available on my day...super frustrating because I already sent them all my info and I just had to put my deposit down!

But I will definitely be having a stylist come to me at my hotel the day-of. Most of the prices I'm seeing are $65-$85 for day-of hair and/or trial for the bride, and then $50-75 for Bridesmaids. Travel fees are usually separate and I've been told it's free or up to $150.

Every area is going to be different.

Makeup prices are approximately the same, though I plan to do my own makeup.

  • I am bringing a hairdresser with me hahaha, yup that's right, bringing one on my DW :P Although she is a good friend of one of my BMs and has offered to do our hair for next to nothing :) She's doing trials just while hanging out with us at girls nights :)

As for makeup, we are all doing our own. 2 of my BMs and I went together to the MAC counter to get some tips/tricks.
  • Wendy My girl is in Rowland heights these are her prices

Bride Makeup $180 (includes a free trial run for makeup only) Hair trial is $30
    Airbrushing (each application) $25 extra

Bridal Party/mothers makeup $65 per person

    Body Makeup $30 extra
    Tattoo Covering $30 extra
Groom $25 (includes mild grooming/"manscaping", anti-shine to minimize sweat and oil, Blemish covering)
    Hair (simple curls) $55

    Hair (updo) $65

I just had my trial because I really wanted to lock her it, It kinda sucked because I had to come home to the FI so like 30 minutes after it was done I washed it off, I would have prefered to have it done before the shower or bachelorette.. if you trust the person, you can just pay the deposit and have the trial later
She will be coming to my hotel the morning of and doing everyones make up and then having a few other girls do everyone elses hair.

We're having a make up artist come to the house the morning of the wedding. Bridal makeup is $125, and the trial is $55. Im also paying for make up for the MOH and both of the moms as a little gift. Each of them is $75 each. She recommended I do my trial over the summer, but I know a girl who is getting married in December and did hers this past weekend. So I think you can really do it whenever.

As far as hair, Im not sure yet! We are thinking of asking our hair dresser to ask for the day off and pay her $400-$500 to come to the house and do my hair, MOH hair, moms hair, and flower girls hair. We are nervous though because we dont want to get her in trouble with her boss or anything. So we're still working on that one.

I do live in Fairfield County in CT, which can be a pricey place. So Im not really sure how the prices stack up against other areas, but I would imagine theyre probably pretty similar to OC. I figured its a necessity of the wedding, so I really didnt shop around too much. I probably should have! :)

  • I am torn between having mine done and doing it myself. In the end it will cost about the same but if I do it myself I will own the product.

The salon I go to has a bridal package of manicure, pedicure, up do, and makeup for $150. I will likely get my hair done there but I am not sure about all the rest of it.

I'm going to talk to my hair guru in two weeks and see what he thinks about their makeup service. I am not sure that I trust someone to do it without making me look over done. I'm not a huge makeup person and FH gets turned off by lots of makeup.

The downside to doing it myself is that I'll have to learn how to do it but that's knowledge that will be useful to have.

This reminds me that I need to call my salon and have make an appointment to have my eyebrows shaped this weekend.

  • Honestly, I'm just going to do the makeup myself and have my mom do my hair. She's not a pro or anything, but what I want isn't super complicated. We'll both have to practice, but it'll be tons cheaper and that's just not an area I care to spend tons of money on for one day. I will be getting waxed and such, though. =)
  • My makeup artist is charging 40 for my bridesmaids and 75 for me. My 75 includes the trial, which I will be doing on May 12th before we take our engagement photos. On the wedding day she will come to my ceremony location to do everyone's makeup. I don't know how much my hair will be yet, but I'm thinking it will range between 55 to 75.

Make-up for me is $175, includes trial w/ two looks, as well as individual fake lash application and a lip gloss and a touch-up kit. She'll travel up to a certain mileage for that fee- will have her come to my mom's hotel, I think, since she's doing my mom's makeup too, and it's near my hair salon. Then I'll be driving 1hr 45min in full hair & make-up to the hotel to get dressed. I might be psycho, thinking that'll work... She's charging $65 for mom or bridesmaids (they're not really interested tho).

Haven't nailed down the hair thing yet, but I am 90% sure it'll be my regular guy.

  • MOH's mom is a trained MUA, she has offered her services as her gift.... will be doing all the girls + moms. Hair will be done buy regular hair stylist. Both ladies will be coming to us. Expected cost will be about $30/$45 per person, depending on how complicated the hair style they want is.

where is your makeup artist out of? i see you're in the suburbs and i am too but they are so vast it's possible you're actually far away from me. (i'm in arlington heights/schaumburg area). these prices seem great though, most i have seen are over $100 for each (hair and makeup).
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

Both will be coming to my venue as the venue we booked has a salon and that is included in our package.

    Hair is:
    Trail: $45
    day of bridal $65
    attendants is $45 per girl.
She lives in Estes so no travel costs. I am having my trail with her this weekend so excited but not quite sure what I am going to do just yet.

    Makeup is
    Trial Run: $50.00
    Bride (day of): $75.00
    Bridesmaid: $50.00
    Mother of Bride/Groom: $50.00
    traveling costs is $25
did a trail with her in Feb and absolutely loved the look so we put a $50 deposit and booked her-super excited.

most places we quoting $200 for hair alone plus more for a trial and then traveling costs were crazy and then makeup was $150 or more and add in traveling costs from denver as well so happy I found these two and they have been wonderful to work with
  • I'm thinking about booking a trial next weekend, but I'll either end up sporting my look to a party at a brewery (and looking waaaaaaaay overdone), or for the drive home on Sunday (way way waaaaaaaay overdone for the rural Michigan gas station pit stops).  I also haven't given much thought on how I want my hair/makeup, so I don't want the trial to be a waste.  But on the other hand... it would be nice to check that one off the list, especially since the summer is getting booked up, and I don't know when we'll be back in the area.

Seriously, I'm driving myself crazy with things like this.

  • Thanks everyone for the responses. It's just nice getting a feel for what everyone is paying and when they are getting trials done. Gives me a little bit of a starting point.
