Online RSVP

We are considering using the RSVP section of our wedding website and providing a phone number for people to respond.  Has anyone else done this instead of having response cards mailed back to you?  I received a recent wedding invitation where the couple did that, and I thought it was a great idea. We would save on stamps and it makes it easier to track all the responses in one place instead of having a bunch of cards to go through.  Thoughts?

Everyone I have seen on the other boards has regretted doing this. There are often glitches on the sites and they have way more follow up calls to make from people who don't rsvp. it seems people are more willing to mark a box and drop a card in the mail instead of remembering to logon or make a phone call.
  • We are doing an online RSVP. Our families are all very computer savy (even my grandmother is on FB lol) so going online is actually easier than mailing it. Plus we just didn't want to spend all that extra money on stamps (it's 61 cents a stamp here!) and extra paper/etc...
We are providing people our phone number as well just in case there is a glitch or anything like that. We already have a pretty good idea who is coming after sending out the STD so I'm not too concerned about the RSVP.
I think it really depends on your guests and what would work best for them. We had mentioned using the online RSVP to a few of our guests and they all loved the idea. They wanted to check out our wedsite anyway :P  I also tested it out a few times and it works well; they can select their meal and rsvp without too much hassle (weddingwire.com).

  • If you do it I would provide more than 1 way for guests to respond. So, in case your grandparents or uncles/aunts do not use the computer they can still RSVP.

I have seen a lot of people regret doing this b/c websites are not always reliable etc.

  • I agree with PPs, I have read so many posts on here of women that regret this because technology isn't always reliable.
  • We are doing it because it saved us over $100 (we are on a super tight budget) between the type of invites we could buy, no response card, and less stamps.  We will have a phone number as well for people who aren't computer savvy.  Not sure which one you are using, but weddingwire has made their sites including the RSVP app mobile friendly so I figure what could be easier!  There could be glitches I guess but everyone will have 3-4 weeks to reply so it can't be a problem all that time.  I figure we'll get responses way faster too.  I was also told by my FMIL that FI's extended family doesn't know the etiquette of those on the envelope are those invited so they'd RSVP to bring their kids (we aren't having kids).  So besides follow up calls we'd have the more awkward "sorry but your kids arent invited" calls.  Using the online tool allows you to only RSVP for people on the guest list...no room to write in names or numbers.  It really was the best option for us.
  • We're using weddingwire.com for our online RSVPs as well as a Google Voice phone number for our guests to respond.  Less paper waste and saves us from spending money on more stamps.

Thanks for your responses.  Hopefully, we won't have any problems since we're giving them the option to call if they can't respond online.
