When we talked to the drive-in guy we discussed possibly having the concession stand do the catering. Do you think it is a bad idea to give everyone a ticket that gets them one hot dog and choice of a small bag of popcorn or a soft pretzel? Then, anything they want beyond that they can get? Is that too stingy or just an all around bad idea?

My other concern is the concession stand is under the screen and our reception is going to be as far back as we can get so the movie goers on the other side of the screen won't be disrupted. That's a bit far for guests to be walking back and forth repeatedly. We will have drinks, some snack items (cotton candy and cake for sure ..not sure what else), and the bar right "in'' the reception "area."

Does anyone have any suggestions for other food options or a different way to do the food? I would love to keep it vintage feeling since it is at such a historic site, and if it could keep within the whole drive in movie it would be fantastic!

What about skipping that and doing finger sandwiches or something closer to your actual reception?  You could do themed foods still, and keep them cheap, but since you wouldn't have to pay the venue for their overpriced hot dogs, you could probably stretch it a bit further.  Like corn dogs on sticks, nachos and cheese dip, sliders, popcorn... you could buy a lot of these things in bulk and serve that way!

What time is the reception? I think the concession stand is perfectly fine (fits with your theme), but I'm not sure about only offering hotdogs. Do you have guests that are vegetarian or otherwise don't eat pork? Could you offer something else? I personally don't eat pork and FI is allergic to nitrates so the only ones he can eat are special ones that I buy for him or else he blows up. What else can they make? If you can, I'd also try to not do tickets- it's better if your guests can just go up to the counter and pick what they want. Can you have the concession people set food up by your bar in the reception area? Like, can they set up hotdogs and whatever else and fries and pretzels and such. I think that would really work the best.

I think that the catering thing should be rethought a little bit. Do you have any options besides hot dogs? What about vegetarians or people with dietary restrictions?
I also agree the walk is too far. If you do opt to get them to cater, can they set something up closer to your reception?

I agree with PP's, that really isn't alot of food, my 6yr old niece would still be hungry after that! I do understand your feelings of wanting to keep with your theme though! We are having a country fair theme so doing all the foods you would find at a fair and so forth. And yes I think the walk is to far. I would look into seeing if they could cater more in your area, if that's possible, or even look into renting those little food trucks! We had thought about doing that at one point but our caterer has agreed to work with what we want so we are fine now. But they have hot dog carts, chip trucks, trucks that have it all, burgers, chicken fingers etc, taco trucks, sandwich trucks - you name it they have one that will serve it! That way you get all the theme food you want still in a 'drive-in style' way with the little trucks!

There are no food trucks in my area that do private parties.

I also wouldn't be able to not do the tickets, unless I wanted to pay for the people watching a movie on the other side of the theater.

We have the option of having a family friend do catering, but they would be limited to coney islander's. Which, I'm totally fine with! I love the idea of corndogs. We originally wanted to do burgers, but we have a no fire restriction. 

I was concerned that would be too little food; so, I will rethink this and see what I can come up with! Thanks for all the input!

I am doing alot of things at my wedding that people on other boards dont agree with...please remember we are asking questions to people we dont know...if you really wanna do something DO IT and go over the idea with your bridemaids....if people wanna stick their nose up then dont come to the wedding...let us enjoy our day...the people that care will BE there no matter what!

That is a terrible attitude and rather stuck up. You should be considerate of your guests as they are the nearest and dearest to you.

OP I am glad you are rethinking the food. Look into grocery stores or small restaurants to cater. Your guests will be hungry otherwise.

ETA: Can your family friend's do some other vintage type foods ? E.g kettle korn, lemonade?

sorry if my comment to someone else offended you...did I state anything in my post that was inconsiderate to my guests? If any of my guests have issues I would hope they would come to me so we could work out a solution but I am NOT or can NOT accommadate everyone, that's real life!

Yes!  Basically you said that if your guests didn't like something/needed something, tough sh*t...and that the advice of "strangers" should be taken with a grain of salt.  A lof of the wonderful ladies on the 9/12 board consider themselves to be each other's friends.  No guest at your wedding would have the audacity to come to you, in your wedding gown on your wedding day, with a problem.  That does NOT mean a real issue would not exist.  In the case of OP, it does not sound like there is nearly enough food, which is unacceptable and she is asking "strangers" to help her solve the problem before hand, which is the correct attitude.

OP, you are right to be concerned about the amount of food provided to your guests...it does not sound like enough.  The other posters have offered some great ideas that you should encorporate.

Take this with a grain of salt. The point of the wedding reception is to celebrate with your guests and thank them for being there. That being said, if its being thrown as a 'thank you' of sorts for your guest, then their opinion should be taken into consideration. That would be like saying you're buying someone a birthday gift, and you're going to buy them what you like and if they don't like that, then that's their problem....

I am glad to hear you're rethinking the original plan, I do agree there's not enough food there. Your friend catering sounds like a lot of fun! As pp said, are there other traditional things she could do as well?

Just a thought... but, are you allowed to use electricity?   They have the electric grills now that you could totally grill hot dogs & hamburgers on.  So, no fire would be needed.
