Nontraditional music freak out

I am not having a church wedding and am instead choosing rather nontraditional indie songs for the trip down the aisle, recessional, etc. I have not been to many weddings and am not sure how long songs need to be and whether or not the bridesmaids & I walk down the aisle to the same song or not.

The song I've picked seems to probably be long enough for my four bridesmaids & me to get down the aisle... but I don't know which is worse: not having enough time to get down the aisle or having extra music where we're just standing there for a minute or however long until the song ends and ceremony begins. The song I like I think would be just long enough... no extra pad time.

How long should I assume I'll need to get down the aisle? Are you Knotties having one song for your bridesmaids and another for you? How are you doing it?

Re: Nontraditional music freak out

  • You should do a test run.  Just get four people together and walk the distance of your aisle and see how long it takes.  My guess is for 5 people, one song would be fine.     But, I would seriously try it out, just to be sure.  :)
  • My BM are walking down the aisle to one song and I am walking down the aisle to different song. My aisle is pretty long though and it is not in a church either. My songs are also none traditional. I would test the aisle like pp said just to make sure
  • Do you have someone who could fade the music out for you?  I'd pick a different song for you - it's nice to announce the bride that way, a bit special.  And being able to fade it out ensures you won't run out of music, and that you won't have to stand there and wait for it to end on its own.  How you walk on that day might be quicker or slower than you practice, so it's the only way to be really sure.

  • I am also having non traditional songs. My BMs are walking down to a different song then I am.  If the songs run a little long Im doing what PP said and fading it out. I dont think you will have a problem with it being too short but you can always test it out. A friend of mine that just got married outdoors with a similar set up to what Im having told me that the walk is a lot quicker then you think.

  • Thanks for the advise guys! The song I was thinking for the BM & me to walk down the aisle is only like 2 1/2 minutes long so I'd have just about 30 seconds. When I listen to it, it sounds long enough, but I don't know how long my aisle is. It's not church-aisle long, but not super short either. Sigh. We'll see.
  • Who's in charge of running the music? If it's your DJ, he should definitely be able to fade out the music into the next song with a smooth transition. There's not much he can do about song being too short though, like PP said I'd test that out.

  • Yea, we have a DJ. I will discuss this with him.

    Thanks so much!
