Engagement announcement??

My FMIL, as you all know, is not very good at deciding when something is not appropriate for a given situation. Most recently, she decided out of no where that she want to announce our engagement in the local paper. Ummm, little late on that, we have been engaged for over a year. So yesterday she was blowing my phone up with texts asking my parents names and where i graduated from. Then, she asked if she could come over and pick up a picture that is currently my facebook pic. The convo (I kid you not), went like this:

FMIL: Can I come pick up that picture to have it put in the paper?
Me: I don't have a print of it, its just on facebook.
FMIL: How did it get there?
Me: It was on my camera.
FMIL: Can I take the camera to Walgreens and make a copy?
ME: Its not on the camera anymore, I uploaded it to my computer.
FMIL: So.... how do I get it?
Me: Save it to your computer from facebook.
FMIL: How do I do that?
Me: Ask one of your kids, I can't explain via text!

I understand that not everyone, especially parents, are up to speed on comuter stuff, but good golly! Also, the picture has christmas stuff in the background and is very distracting. We have an official engagement pic but she says she doesn't like that one as much. FI actually didn't argue with her and said "Just let her do whatever she wants." The other thing is that we know the real reason she is doing this and why she does anything... because it will get her some attention. She wants nothing more than everyone in town to come up to her and tell her how wonderful the article was. Gag me.

Anyway I thought I would share because it was kind of humorous. But I was also wondering if anyone did announcements and if so, did you include where you work? She kept bugging me about putting my job in there and I really hate this place so I would rather not.

Re: Engagement announcement??

  • I understand your situation completely!  An announcement in the local paper was something that my mom really wanted to do.  I could care less!  I've learned to pick my battles during wedding planning and this was something that was not worth arguing about.  It made her happy so that's all that matters.
Just humor your FMIL and let her put it in the paper, it doesn't matter how long you've been engaged.  We didn't include our places of employment, just parents names and high schools.  If you don't like that picture that she's picked out, is there another that you could offer her?  Good luck!

  • This makes me happy that neither my mother or FMIL suggested that, we were braced for it hoping it wouldn't lol
  • I think it's an older tradition that many couples skip now, but that the older generation still appreciates; especially in smaller communities. I know my parents would like it to be in their local paper, so once our engagement photos are taken, we'll submit one for them. Not that we really need to seeing as our pic was in their local paper a couple months ago for a "honeymoon" article LOL

On a side note, I don't think it's too late for an announcement; an engagement lasts up until the couple is married ;)

  • We put an article in the paper when we got engaged. Unfortunately I was not working at that time.

  • We didn't do this. Does anyone really buy the paper anymore?

This is the MAIN reason why we are not doing it. My FFIL has becoming the FILZILLA from heck during the whole planning. Also I would have to put the announcement in a total of four papers, one statewide and three local papers (FFIL hometown, where FFIL/FI/me live and FOB hometown). So, gag me with a spoon!!!!!

OMG Cowgirl I can't believe you posted this.  I am going thru the EXACT same thing with FMIL.  Not the computer stuff but last week she texts me out of the blue saying how she'd like to put one in their paper.  FI is kinda a private guy and no one I know will see this paper so I asked him how he felt.  He asked what it had to say.  I looked at some (since I had never actually seen one) online and they were soooo boring!  So not us.  Too stiff and traditional.  So he said we could do it but could I type up something more original that didn't define our relationship by where we went to school and our occupations.  His job is ever changing and I don't even like my current career choice and am going back to school.  And, we work to live, not live to work so we think work is not who you are.  So, we told FMIL ok but we needed the requirements set by the paper.  And, apparently it"s just a form asking those stiff questions and we can't add any color to it.  Told FI and he said he didn't want to do it anymore!  FMIL would love to tell anyone and everyone that we are getting married and they should come to the wedding because she's so excited (FI is 27 and they think of it as he's FINALLY getting married as if he was 50).  I told FI he gets to break the news to his mom.  The fact that she texted me 2 hours ago about if I had it done yet makes me believe FI hasn't told her yet.......
