September 2012 Weddings

Special Meaning?

Hi ladies!! I was thinking about how everyone's wedding is so personal and wanted to know what you're doing that reflects you/your fiance. Any special meaning to your wedding choices?

For me, our ceremony/reception location is meaningful. We're getting married on the college campus where Fiance went to undergrad and where we spent a lot of time for the first year and a half of our relationship (he lived in a building connected to our reception building). College was like "home" for him, and since he doesn't have family that live in Michigan (where my family is, and where the wedding is) it was important to me that he feel as comfortable as possible. I think it will be special to be surrounded by the places where we made our first memories and fell in love (corny I know).

Your turn!

Re: Special Meaning?

  • Yup.... we knew we wanted a downtown wedding venue because it's "our" thing. On weekends we don't have my son, we often go for walks in the market or do the touristy thing at the Parliament Buildings. We wanted to share "our" place with our friends and family.

We are also getting married in FI's church so it's very special to him and his mother; to us as well because we've sorta become part of that community.

We are giving bottles of maple syrup as favours which is also very personal to us. FI's uncle has a sugar bush and we sell the syrup in the city for him. It means a lot to us that FI bottled the syrup himself and even his Granny helped seal them ;)

I've added a lot of personal touches in other aspects of the decor and such. I really feel like this is OUR wedding :)

  • We are doing a college thing too. We went to a school with the highest marriage rate of alumni, we will be official "miami mergers" and get a valentines day card every year and such, so we think that is fun. We will have vintage photos of campus with the table numbers and there will be cards that explain that each card has a number and a board will tell what it is. We are also doing a picture of FI and I with out college flag. Our cake toppers are Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewie to represent fi, me, and our dog. FI also agreed to let there be country music when the guests are sitting down, so that's a personal thing for me lol.
  • Based on our officiants outline, we designed our whole ceremony.  We are doing traditional vows to cover the "typical/general" stuff but then writing our own vows for our more personal promises as well (my vows so far focus on promising to always do those little things that make us us).  I will be carrying my late grandmother's rosary down the aisle wrapped around my bouquet.  I made my own garters so they are half a material of FI's college and half of my college (went to rival schools).  We also can't afford a DJ so we will hand select every song played the whole day.  I think all my DIY projects make it "us" as well because they are our style and no one else probably has ever had the exact same thing.

mama- you forgot about your choreographed dance to include your son!!!  That's so special and unique ;-)

  • I love reading all your stories!  My FI and I met at UConn and although we didn't offically date until about 8 years later we are getting married at a mansion at a UConn branch.  We are also rockin' Nike Shox customized in our wedding colors so when we're introduced we'll be coming down stairs and everyone can see them.  FI and I are both athletic and laid back...plus I told him years ago that I would get married in sneakers one day and he said that's when he knew I was the one for him! lol.
  • We are getting married in Muskoka - an area that I used to spend A LOT of time with my father, and Jano and I planned a trip up there so he could see what I was always talking about, we went camping once, fell in love, and vowed we will someday move there and build our dream home :)

Our pastor is travelling to the wedding to marry us :)

We met through our involvement in a business, which we are still both in and very passionate about. I have a charm that is the symbol of the business on my bouquet.
  • FI and I are huge hockey fans, we have season tickets to our local AHL team and go to a bunch of NHL games every season. The night before we got engaged we were at a NY Rangers game. :) It's something we enjoy doing with each other.

FI has also played since he was 3 and still plays today. I try to go to all of his games!

We have incorporated this in our STDs (we both were wearing jerseys) and in our cake topper (mini versions of him (whalers jersey) and I (bruins jersey wearing)). I also got him some Whalers cufflinks (surprise for him) to wear with his tux.

I wanted to incorporate it without it being too much hockey...I may try to sneak it in a little more if I can think of ways. :)

    Anniversary
  • We are doing a winery thing because we love wine. The venue is also near the beach and that is our thing to. We love going to the beach and having fun, so our venue reflects this idea......

  • We are getting married in New Orleans because it has become our special place. No other connection there other than it is where we go for my birthday, special weekend getaways together, etc. Actually FI flew me there for my birthday just for a lunch when we first started dating. We are having our RD and Welcome Party at that same restaurant. Our priest is flying to NO as well to marry us.

  • We are getting married on September 28th... because it will be our 8 year dating anniversary :-)
  • We will have our reception at a historic art deco hotel where Louis Armstrong played and various other old skool musicians. It reflects us because we adore the music of the 1920's and 30's and are avid swing dancers/lindy hoppers. The room where our reception is also has a very European piazza feel to it. FI and i have spent a lot of time in Europe separately but this makes it feel very familiar.
  • Our ceremony will be at my family's synagogue, and our reception will be at a museum downtown, very close to our high school (where we met). We have pictures of ourselves in the museum from the first month of our relationship...haha. Our rehearsal dinner will be at the golf club 1 block from the house where FI grew up. The beauty of being from a mid-sized city is that virtually everywhere has some kind of special significance to us.

FI's wedding band was my grandfather's.

Other than that, I've thought about doing table numbers with a theme, as I've seen other couples do, to share more about themselves (like "places we've visited" or "musicians we love" or something) but regular numbers are a whole lot more practical when guests have to actually find their tables.
  • We're getting married in Stillwater, MN where FI was living when we started dating.  We spent a lot of time riding our bikes around there and absolutely love it there, so we loved the idea of sharing that with our friends and family.

My mom and I are making buckeyes for the favors.  They're peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate.  They look like the nut from a buckeye tree.  I was born and half raised in Ohio.  Almost all of my family is still in Ohio.  My family is all Ohio State fans, so it'll be a nice touch of home.  Plus they taste AMAZING!

We're getting married on my parents' 39th anniversary, so that's something else that's really special about the day.  I'm super excited to share the date with them and share our big party with them, too.

There are a few other things, but nothing popping into my head at the moment.

    So In Love
