XP: Help me recreate this centerpiece

So I found this picture a while ago and I think this is what I want my centerpieces to look like:

http://isa2.stylemepretty.com/wp-content/submissions/uploads/erin@egjewelry.com/16455/i_0800.jpg

I want to start talking to florists so I think I should first try to make something like this, so that I can gauge how easy or hard it will be and if it will look how I imagine. If it doesn't turn out how I expect, then I will know that I need floral centerpieces and so will include it when I talk to florists.

I've bought a couple of birdcages off of ebay and plan to spraypaint them ivory.  But I am sort of stuck on everything else. Where can I find candle holders like that? I was thinking that instead of using those, I could make lace-wrapped votive holders like this: http://www.bellenza.com/wedding-ideas/diy-projects/easy-as-1-2-3-make-your-own-lace-candle-holders.html

and then for the candle stick holders, I was thinking I could try to find some at goodwill and spraypaint them, but i'm not sure how to give them that weathered look. any ideas how to replicate these or something to substitute them with? would it look ok without them?

and then the middle of the birdcage itself looks like it has some mossy stuff. not quite sure what that is or where to get it. anyone have any ideas about that? I was thinking of adding a bigger pillar candle in the middle of the birdcage as well.

and then i love the table numbers like that but i haven't found them anywhere. I was thinking i might have to make them myself by hotgluing normal numbers to bases.

  • First off, they will be gorgeous - such a pretty centrepiece!!

As for the candle holders, you could always buy regular once and design a "shell" to go around the holder. Or get "luminaries"; they stick on the holders and reflect the words or design you want.

For that "weathered" look, Michael's has a crackle paint that gives you that effect. I'll be using those for my frames. I believe you can buy that mossy stuff at Michael's as well; maybe even discount dollar stores.

As for the table numbers, have you checked etsy?

  • I LOVE those centerpieces.  I think you could def. recreate those taller candle holders.  DollarTree has glass tapers and glass holders that could be hot glued and painted to match that design, it wouldn't be exact but it might be worth a try to see if you like them.  Here are the links.  Good luck!

  • That is such a beautiful centerpiece! I think your DIY lace idea would work pretty well. For the tall candles, you could glue round votives to candles holders.

    I bought something like this:

And I'm sure you could find some glass candle holders at the dollar or thrift stores.

The moss stuff is super easy. Just take a coupon and get a pack at Michael's. It's in the floral section. They have green types all the way to brown and white-ish types so just pick what you think is prettiest. =)

The table numbers should be easy too. I'd get the wood numbers at craft stores (I think Walmart has them too) and stain them or paint them then glue them to a base.

Everything shouldn't be too difficult, but I imagine its going to be very time consuming so I would start as soon as you start getting materials.
  • thanks everyone! looks like at trip to michael's and the dollar store are in order. i actually already bought a couple of the votives from the dollar store to use as christmas decorations, and i have lace and modge podge, so i'm thinking i'll try to make the lace votives this weekend.

i'm still sort of afraid to use spraypaint, but i'm thinking i should do some of that this weekend since it's surprisingly warm here (like 50 degrees!), so i can do it outside.

  • Those are beautiful.  Michaels actually has similar candle holders that are on sale right now.  they have them in all different colors. I think with the 40% off coupon they come to about $4 dollars a piece.  Hope you find them!!
  • I love that centerpiece. I think they will look so nice!

Just thought I'd add that if the crackle paint that mamameech reccomended doesn't work, there is a way to recreate the look of mercury glass by using Krylon's Looking Glass spray paint (at Michael's). There are a couple of different ways to achieve the look of mercury glass, but make sure you use glass candle holders. I suggest googling for a tutorial, but it's pretty simple.

    Good luck!

  • I was in the Christmas Tree Shop today and saw that they just got in tons of birdcages that would work perfectly for these centerpieces. I'm not sure if you have those in the Chicago-area, but if you do, I'd suggest going to take a look. There were ones in white, off-white, and green and they were only a few dollars.

  • Sorry, I'm just seeing this now.

Their website is christmastreeshops.com Looks like they don't have any in IL, but they do have two in IN. Not sure how close that is to where you are?

  • hmm. the store in mishawaka, IN (near south bend) would be about 2 and a half hours from me. i actually went to school in valparaiso, so if i went back to visit, it'd only be about an hour from there. hmmm.

i'll have to keep it in mind. thanks for the info! i wish they had an online store.
