Changing up your beauty routine?

Are you changing up your beauty routine before the wedding?  What are you adding in?  How far out are you starting it?

I have a tendency to breakout so that is my #1 concern.  I've never had a facial and have purchased a couple groupons.  I'm doing them way far out though (first one I'm going to try will be in April or May) but figured it would just kind of cleanse me to start a good routine.  I'm kinda bad about lotion too (only put on after I shave or if I feel really scaly) so I need to incorporate one of those gradually tinted moisturizers (like Jergens) to give me some color and smooth out my skin.  Want to whiten my teeth as well before the wedding.  I feel like I should deep condition my hair every so often too.  I'm kinda low maintenance on my usual routine so feel like I'm going to need a check list to look at to stay consistent!!!

Re: Changing up your beauty routine?

  • I just know things I am going to avoid like crazy in the weeks before the wedding. I will need to get my eyebrows done obviously but for some reason I occasionally get covered in tiny white heads all over my forehead after they apply a certain lotion. I usually tell them not to do it but last time I forgot and the very next day they are there full force.

Also, for some reason my nitrile gloves that I wear at work make my face break out within 12 hours of coming into contact with skin other than my hands. I'm talkin about the massive, painful, teenager zits that take weeks to go down. If i accidentally touch my face while trying to move my hair or fix my safety glasses I am assured to have a honker on my face the next day. I will NEED to be extra cautious with this in the weeks before hand!
  • I want to try using one of those tinted moisturizers too but am positive I'm going to have to like write it somewhere or something or I'll forget!

volley, what do you use for facial cleaning regularly? I used to have tons of issues with my skin until I switched products. I'm planning on doing the same thing as you & getting a facial soon to give myself a cleaner slate to work with. Planning on getting the facial sometime in April & continuing from there.

I have hyper sensitive skin, so I have to be cautious about trying new products like foundation. I'm planning on getting a foundation from the same company I get my facial cleansers from & trying it out as a tinted moisturizer.

  • I'm terrible at mosturizing too.  I always forget to put lotion on anything bug my face and my hands.  I may have to put notes on every mirror in my house to remember the routine.  I'm going for my first ever facial on Saturday, using a groupon too, and I'm excited.  I want to ask the girl how to improve my complexion because I'm always breaking out and my face gets very red very quickly. I also need to figure out what kind of makeup works for me because I've been using liquid foundation and it feels like it melts off my face by 2:30 everyday (not pretty) so clearly that doesn't work.

Let me know if you come across any good tips for remembering these things, I'll do the same  :)  I'm sure once we get used to doing these things everyday it will become second nature, it's just the getting there part that's hard haha.

  • Yes I'm so bad about remembering.  I think I'm going to a super weirdo about it and make myself a calendar that lists things I should be doing daily, weekly, biweekly, etc.  I'm a list person and love to physically check things off so I'm thinking that could work for me.

josephwedding-  I typically mix up my facial cleaner based on what's on sale, partly a financial decision but I also figured it prevents my skin from getting used to something.  I like to use something in the morning with a gentle microbead or something to keep my skin exfoliated.  And then at night use something with salylic acid (prefer to benzoyl peroxide because bp makes my face a little red).  I'll also spot treat with a cream too.  What cleaner do you like?!

Sarah&Eric- I'm a mineral foundation girl day-to-day but it just doesn't have the coverage I want for the wedding. I use it because I also found that liquids slid off my face.  I tried Make Up For Ever HD over the weekend and I really liked it.  I'm really pale and never had a makeup that matched my skin that perfectly.  It stayed in place really well too (it's oil-free).  The lady at Sephora suggested I use a primer with it to help it last.  I had just placed an online order for a makeup setting spray so I'm going to see if that is enough without the primer to make it last (nothing against primer I'm just trying not to go over my makeup budget haha).  Setting spray comes in the mail today so once I give it a try I'll let you know how it goes.
  • volley, I used to do the same thing when buying face cleansing products! I use a brand called Lush & swear by it. It does cost more, but I find that you don't use as much of the Lush products as the bargain products, it's all natural (a lot of their products are vegan), and it really has made my skin look & feel better!

BTW, not sure if I mentioned it but ya'll can call me Nikki =]

  • I'm letting my hair grow out and have not had it highlighted since at least September (gasp!) I wanted to grow out any damage that might have been done from all the highlighting I've been doing in the past year. I'm ready for a coloring now though.

As far as shampoo goes, I've gone all natural. I now only use baking soda and distilled water. It's made a HUGE difference on the thickness of my hair! I have extremely fine and thin hair. In fact, it had started falling out in the front and it was so embarrassing. It's now starting to grow back from the baking soda. I also make sure to wear a head wrap when I go to bed in order to protect my pillow and thus my face from any of the oils from my hair.

I've also started using natural oils on my body as my wash. It's called Dr. Bronner's Castille soap. It's awesome! My skin is way more moisturized, even without using moisturizer afterwards.

As far as my face goes, I use olive oil and castor oil. It's a mixture that I found online. You use more or less of each oil depending on if you have dry or oily skin. It's really awesome because it gets my make-up off with no rubbing and it feels like I'm getting a facial every time. My skin is doing really good. My only issue now is I'm breaking out at my jaw line a lot. I'm going to start focusing there with the oils though in order to prevent that.

I've become sort of old fashioned now when it comes to my beauty routine! But I am saving a TON of money and it feels good to not use any chemicals on my skin and hair.

</div><div>I had a microdermabrasion once (I won it) and it was AMAZING. It like sucks all the gunk out of your pores and completely buffs your face. My skin felt amazing for about a week afterward. I'm considering getting one right before the wedding b/c I feel like foundation will sit on that kind of skin so much better.

  • I use Dr. Bronner's Castille soap too. I use the unscented baby soap, the stuff is great!

I use Orginal Mane 'n Tail shampoo & conditioner, yes the stuff they use on horses LOL.  It's been the best thing for my hair! It's much softer, less frizzy, and I acutally think it's helping my hair grow. I haven't dyed my hair in over a year, and don't plan on doing so ever again. I'm growing rather partial to my natural color

romamor, I heard this tip once & it really works. Wipe down your work phone at least once a week (think Friday when you're leaving for the weekend) with an antibacterial wipe & it should help reduce the jaw line acne.

  • Nikki-  I've actually seen a Lush store in one of our malls.  My mom and I went in there to play one day but I didn't buy anything because it was a little more.  But, knowing that they work for someone, worth a shot!

romamor-  That is so interesting!  I've never heard of some of those tricks.  I did start using tea tree oil and like that.  Do you know how that compares to Castor by chance?  I may try that baking soda and distilled water though!
  • Volley, it's definitely worth the extra $. My daily face cleanser (9 to 5) is $10 for 3.4oz, but it takes me like 3 months to go through a bottle of it because you only need like a dime sized amount of it.

You can always ask for a sample of something from Lush if you're unsure about a product. For an exfoliator, I use their Ocean Salt face cleanser. I got a sample to see how it would affect my skin and it's awesome. I use it twice a week since my skin is so sensitive, but it really cleans all the gunk off my face.

Josephwedding, thanks for the tip! I'm sure that probably has something to do with it too!

volleygurl, the castor oil is supposed to expel any impurities, leading to less breakouts. I'm curious about the tea tree oil though, too! Do you like it?

For conditioner with the "no poo" method, I use a combination of 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, a few drops of lavender, and 10 ounces of distilled water. That usually lasts me through several shampoos. Here are links to some of my tricks:

ETA: changed long links to clickys!

  • I've finally found something that works on the rosacea-induced spots (kinda looks like acne but isn't- really furstrating when most everything out there is geared for regular ol' pimples, and doesn't work on these). I've also gotten pretty religious about eye cream, and sunscreen, both of which I've slacked on (it's too late to undo what's done, alas). Also starting waxing in late June. We also got a new showerhead that filters out chlorine, which will hopefully help my skin and hair a bit. I will be fluffed & buffed by September!
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Ugh, how do I create a clicky for a long link?? I thought I did it correctly but apparently not...
  • Ladies if you use any type of daily medication put the lotion bottle with it. When you take your meds, it will be a visual reminde to do the lotion!  Smile
  • romamor, type a word (i.e. clicky) then highlight the word. Next to the smiley face icon, there's a chain link icon that will appear, click that & insert the link.

That should work. Hopefully I explained that clearly enough =D

I don't really know if its an allergy it just makes me get a huge zit wherever I touch. It doesnt do anything to my hands or arms but my face, neck and shoulders will do it. Its very rare that i touch my neck or shoulders but sometimes I just fix my shirt/labcoat without thinking and BAM! I've touched my skin. We have latex gloves but one of the chemicals I work with eats latex rather quickly so nitrile is best.

It ate through the glove fingers in about .564 seconds and ruined most of my nails :(</div>

  • I'm not going to eat chocolate or drink soda a month before the wedding(these totally make me break out).  I also started using bare minerals and my face complexion has gotten way better.  I am also going to try and be out in the sun at most as possible this summer because that helps get rid of my zits!

I really like it!  It's interesting because right after you put it on it makes your skin feel very smooth and then the drying properties kick in (which is what I want it for).  I always follow it with a moisturizer though to prevent overdrying).  It's other uses are for burns scrapes, cuts as an anti-septic.  So it is meant to be a cleaning out type product as well.  I may have to google castor vs. tea tree to see if one is better than the other.
  • I'm going to be starting up my facials again in July. I'll do one in July, one in August and two in September probably. I work at a Massage Envy and we do facials so I get them at a discount. I also fully plan on having about 2-4 massages before the wedding as well. =)

I'm also buying some new makeup and whitening my teeth. Oh, and tanning by the pool. =P Other than that I'm not really changing too much.
  • I'm probably going to start getting regular facials, too - I'm thinking I'll start over the summer and then have last one maybe a week before the wedding? In terms of cleansers, moisturizers, etc., I am in LOVE with Mario Badescu products. They're pricier than drugstore brands, but my skin and hair are so much better that it's 100% worth it!
  • I've got to see a dermatologist.  My skin is a nightmare right now.  I break out on my face and really badly on my chest.  I've tried so many different acne things, and they just don't work.  Most of my breakouts are hormonal.  They put me on bc in my early 20's cause my skin was so bad, and it helped better than anything else.  Then about 6 months ago, my dr took me off estrogen, and my skin has been rebelling ever since.  I've been breaking out constantly (really bad break outs) for about 3 months now, and I just don't know what to do about it.  It's time I got professional help.  I'm almost 30 and breaking out like a teenager.

Romamor, I am definitely going to try that baking soda shampoo.  My hair is super fine and limp, and it sounds intriguing.

    So In Love
