AW: Interview!

It's today at 3:00 - I'm both very excited and very nervous.  I'll be spending a lot of time prepping and researching the company today.  Vibes please!!So - on a slightly related note - I had my annual review yesterday -which went fine.  But my boss says to me, "I know your resume has been out recently."  Me - completely speechless.I feel very awkward talking about me looking for another job with my current boss - especially because he is a part of the reason for it.  He said he'd like it if I told him what was making me unhappy, or why I was leaving - but I wasn't really sure what to say.There are really a lot of small factors that add up to making me unhappy here.  Some of them are not going to change - money being one of them.  And the fact that I have to wonder week to week if I'm going to be getting my paycheck. Seriously - he actually said yesterday that he's hoping the bank comes through for us, or he doesn't think we'll get paid next week... not okay.Anyway - would you have gotten into it with him?  Or just left it alone?Now I feel like he knows I'm interviewing today, even though I told him I have to go home to wait for the plumber cause we have a leak in the basement. (Actually partially true, we do have a very minor leak, but DH and my dad are going to take care of it this weekend.)  And that he'll think I have another Friday, when I actually have a dr's appt.

If he doesn't realize that it's wrong to not know when you can expect your paycheck... he is truely clueless. that being said I am in the same sort of situation. Although I haven't started shopping for new jobs yet. I hope your interview goes well and you don't feel like you have to get into it with your current boss.

Geez, I probably would have been speechless too. I wouldn't feel comfortable sharing what's making me unhappy unless I had secured another job already. The way he said that he knows your resume is out there- that just bugs me. Of course, I have minimal work experience, so I may be completely off-base here, but those were my initial reactions.Many good interview vibes your way!!

I think it's best to be vague with this. Since he knows you're looking, you wouldn't want him to badmouth you to anyone, since you never know who people know. Since it's no secret about the $ (both that the pay won't change and the fact that you may not get paid), you could go with that. And you could even say you're looking for opportunities for advancement, assuming there aren't any where you are (but I'm thinking I remember you mentioning they wanted you to move up, right? Maybe that was someone else...). And I wouldn't worry about what he thinks when you're out. It's not like you shouldn't take PTO at all. If he asks, I would stick to your story if possible.

Dori - no immediate opportunities for advancement.  Although he did say something yesterday about him having plans to upgrade my position, hire a full-time social networking person, and have me supervise that person.  Which would be great - if I actually thought that would happen in the next 6 months.We're basically not hiring except for absolutely 100% necessary positions.  This wouldn't even happen in the next year.Thanks ladies - you kinda confirmed that I should just keep things to myself for the most part.  Hopefully he won't push the issue.

Yeah, even with some of my most understanding bosses, I didn't share details of my job search. I just think it's a bad idea in general.

Ugh, I can not even imagine how that must have felt!  That's my biggest fear about job searching!  :/I would most definitely cite money as the reason - um, you have to feel like you work for a stable company.  You can live in fear that every 2 weeks you might not get paid this time.  And advancement is always a safe bet, as well as just looking for a new opportunity...you have been there for awhile, right?Many many many vibes for today's interview!  I really hope it works out for you so you are out of this situation!

Yep - I've been here almost 4 years.  I know it's not a super long time - but there hasn't been any advancement in that time either.

I wonder if you work for the city... I know they've been having trouble with getting paid... But anyway- I would be very vague with him about why you are leaving, but still tell him in a nice -skimming over the edge- way. Just so he knows if he really wants to keep you, those are the things he has to change. Good luck with 'the plumber'!

Totally agree with Dori and KR, here.  Keep it vague on the advancement trend/stable company situation.  That's legitimate--any company that admits to it's employees (as it should) that they may not have enough money to stay afloat, should expect their employees to be looking to leave before the company goes bankrupt.  After all, if you have 100 people in the company, better to get a jump on the other 99 in looking for a job.I totally get where you're coming from on that though.  FI's company told them about a year ago they only had enough cash to last until spring 2010 unless they had another drug hit the market.  They haven't and it doesn't look like they will, so FI is looking.

Good luck with 'the plumber'!This made me laugh, because it sounds dirty. ;o)Erica, if it comes up again, you can always just tell him what my mom always says--that the best time to look for jobs is when you have one. You don't have to be unhappy to look for a new job--it's good to stay in practice, and worst-case scenario, it can confirm that where you are is your best option.

Thanks everyone!That's good Traci - that's a good one.   I honestly always have my resume active on websites like CareerBuilder and Monster - even when I first started here (with the email updates).  You never know when that perfect opportunity may pop up.
