September 2012 Weddings

Stressing..should I be?

The wedding is for the 29th of September, outside....
It has been one of the hottest summers on record for Missouri.  That weather site that I can't remember the name of right now says normal temps are between 65 and 80 which is perfect.  However, they are also saying there is a 60% chance this years temps will be higher.  50 days to go, invites are out, and now my mother is telling me I need to think about renting someplace for the reception so everyone will be comfortable.  I don't know what to do now.

Re: Stressing..should I be?

  • I'm also a September 29th bride :) our wedding is in RI and our reception is inside since we thought it could be chilly at night (or a hurricane, who knows!) I think every bride with an outdoor wedding-- and even an INDOOR wedding--  stresses about the weather possibilities, so you are not alone. I'm not sure if at this point you would want to change the location? is it possible to think about a backup plan like renting an air conditioned tent for the reception, if you get closer to your day and still think its going to be totally unbearable?
  • Hmmmm. What time does the wedding run? The reception? It does tend to get cooler at night.  Do you have a tent?

  • The wedding is at 530 sunset is 630ish there are several covered areas and a pavillion.  It is in a park, in the particular part there is an old mill a bridge etc, and it is surrounded by trees.  So I am thinking plenty of shade, but seriously today was 98 and I actually said to FI "OMG it's ONLY going to be 98 today!"  I just know that I hate being hot, and I also know if I am hot I would want to ditch my own wedding reception. lol  My mother is not helping either, she hates to be hot too. We called the only place that has a "hall" in our town, but we already have food, and they won't let us use it unless we get our food from them.  Which I understand.

Cool! Did you pick the 29th for a reason?  We picked it because it is the night of the Harvest Moon, it will be big and full.  We enjoy sitting outside under full moons, and it was a full moon when he asked me.  We thought it would be fitting.

My father used to live in New Port, RI. Don't know why I am throwing that in. lol

  • It's really hard to say this far out what the weather will do (sorry I know that doesn't help!).  I would maybe look into an air-conditioned tent as a back up plan.  Try to find one that either has a refundable deposit or a low non-refundable deposit.  Then make the call as few days out as a contract would require (i.e if they have a 48 hour cancellation policy you'd have to just rely on the forecast).

Also, I'd start working on some DIY hand fans for fun.  No clue on your budget so I'm just throwing stuff out there but you could also look into cute parasols for people.  It sounds like a beautiful scene with plenty of shade but you can always do things to make it a little more comfortable.  I was at a wedding in July and the ceremony was outside and it was HOT.  They had glass containers with the spout of cucumber water and lemonade and iced tea and it was certainly nice to have until we got inside.

I wouldn't move your venue personally but work with what you have.  Besides the financially losses if this is the place you have been envisioning your wedding, if you move it and it is a beautiful cool fall day out, you'll be so upset!
  • For me, I HATE the heat haha so I would probably look into renting an air conditioned tent.  My wedding is Sept 15th, I'm in CT.  You never really know what the weather will be like here, as SheilBeil123 said we are in hurricane season (last year we got hit by a tropical storm at the beginning of Sept... lots of damage and power loss).  I have an indoor reception juuuuust incase with out side pavillions.

I'm sure whatever you decide will perfect :)
  • I agree with PPs, if your venue doesn't have an indoor space available, I would look into renting an air conditioned tent. I totally understand the stressing about the weather though. I am a Sept 22 bride with an outdoor wedding and TOTALLY understand wishing we knew exactly what the weather would be like that day hahaha
  • I am September 29th too!  I am in SC too with more heat and humidity and ick al the time than a lot of you girls could ever imagine!   I honestly think you will be okay...I would look into a tent (but only air conditioned if it fits into a budget and you can afford to add it....I have no idea what the price points are on things like that).
By the end of September the chance you have a blazing hot day will be the same chance you have a downpour all day so plan it like a backup :)

Ohhhh and I didn't know about the moon!!!  That makes me really happy :):)
  • Gators, I know the location that you're talking about- I am from AR as well and live close to that site! Isn't there an indoor hall on one side of the pond? Have you looked into renting that?

I didn't know either and now I'm STOKED!  I emailed my photographer if they were comfortable shooting the moon (to get the lighting rright can be tricky I read) and if we could include some photos.  They got back to me already (love a prompt vendor) and said they are so excited to get some photos of our silhouettes against the moon and others.  Thanks for the info!

Yep Harvest moon it should be big and start out red!  I always wanted to get married on a full moon night, when I realized the Harvest Moon was on a Saturday it is the ONLY reason we waited so long. lol  So as far as the weather....I am going to try to not stress...there is a tent place down the road, I know I saw a sign that said tent rental or something.  I looked around at the places avalible around here and it is extremely limited...like 2.  And they are just aweful!  I don't want to move too far from the ceramony site because well most of the guests are out of town and invites have already gone out.  Anyhow, I picked out a few moms, a few guys, my oldes guest, and my preggers MOH and they all said heat wouldn't be a factor for them.  And my MOH pointed out that the sun will be going down right after the wedding.
ANNNNNDDD, I found this great site today, it has a forecast that goes 25 days out, which is still short of the wedding, but I will be able to keep an eye on it.  Here is a link to that site if you want to check it out.

Thanks for all your help ladies, and the positive reinforcement.  Now I will be able to go to my (shudder) mother with the news. lol
