AW Our House Location! (NWR) pics

Saturday FI and I went out to the ranch to "flag" our home location.  We picked up his mom and he took us out to where he had the spot in mind for our house. (he stayed in the pickup while she and I walked up to look)  I'm still having a hard time picturing it all, because it's in a saddle (down spot between 2 hills).  The grader will be out in the next week or so to make the actual pad for the house, so then I think I'll have a better understanding.

To the West. The circled part is FILs house. You can also see FI's pickup. It looks far, but I think it's just a crappy cell phone pic.

Is this how you pictured Montana?!

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

  • Looks good to me! Wow, how far are you from your neighbors? And from "town"? I picture Montana as being extremely rural and hours from everything.

As a contrast, FI and I live and work in Center City, Philadelphia. I live in a building with 200 other people in a crowded city. We don't even own cars.

  • FI's parents will be about 1/2 mile (as the crow flies) and other neighbors are about 2-3 miles.  Not too far :)  "Town" (where I work, small grocery store, PO, 2 bars, and a couple food joints) is 25 miles away. Population around 1,000 not counting the oilfield man camps.  But the big towns are either 45 or 60 miles away, depending on direction.  I prefer the 60 mile town, and that's also where FIs business is located.

There aren't even 200 people in the town I live in right now :)

  • i've always pictured montana as being rural but i've never known someone who has lived there. i'm not sure i could last being that far from "civilization." I mean, 45 or 60 miles just to go out for dinner? or to shop?

Dan and I have always talked about retiring to some remote place like that, but in actuality I don't think either of us could do it. props to you!

do you know everyone in your town?
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

  • Wow those pictures are BEAUTIFUL! I love wide open spaces like that :) I grew up in a pretty rural area, so I understand the whole driving 30 minutes to the store thing. I think its awesome though. Congrats on the new house news... its so exciting :)

Cant wait to see pictures as they build the house!! Keep us updated.

  • I love that its so rural :) I live in a rural area myself so I totally know the feel (but rural Ontario)! I tried living in a city for a bit, it didn't work out lol I felt SO out of place!
  • That's so beautiful.  My grandparents live in a town like the one you described, grocery store, 2 bars, couple food joints.  They have to drive 30-40 minutes to get to a Walmart in the closest two "cities" which are small on their own.  It's such a beautiful place to be though, with no city lights to hinder your view of the night sky.  I've always said there isn't a night sky in the world like the one in Northern Maine, but I'd be willing to bet the view at your house will be pretty awesome too!  Congrats.

  • Wow, that would sure be a big lifestyle change for me, that's for sure! I'd definitely love to experience it some time though. I mean, I'm not sure I could get used to the driving so far to get to everything. I mean, everything I need is in like a few block radius- I can walk to the grocery store, convenience store, liquor store, post office, etc. We even have pick up/drop off dry cleaning! And how can you stumble home from the bar at 2am if you need to drive 25 miles!

  • I don't know everyone in town. but FI sure does.  I've only lived here for 2.5 years.  I taught in the town I live in (<200 ppl) for 2 years, and I know a majority of the people, but since there is an oilboom here, tons of people are moving in from all over the US and I don't know a lot of them.

FI knows so many people in a lot of the surrounding towns, but he's lived here for 33 years.  He forgets to introduce me to people, so I get mad at him sometimes, and other times I just introduce myself.

I will definitely post pictures of the process.  The home is actually being built offsite and brought in.  It's not a mobile home, it's built the same as a home built onsite, just offsite where the builder has all of their staff and supplies and it costs less because they don't have to bring everything to the location.  Many of the houses here are done like that because it's so rural.  The builder does the home in a huge warehouse sort of thing, so the wood and stuff is protected from the elements while being built.

  • That's so exciting!  How long will it take for the house to be built?

Also, God bless you for living so close to your FILs!  I could NEVER do that!  I think a 15 minute drive to my FMIL is too close (but then again, she is CRAZY).

  • FI goes in for the loan this week, and once we get it the house will take 6-8 weeks.  Maybe a little longer because the builders are going to be on an apartment project for 4 weeks starting Feb 15.  While it's being built elsewhere, we can have our septic and basement dug and our pad built.  One more nice thing about being built offsite- it's like multitasking!  My goal is June.

  • My future in laws just bought a cottage about 25 minutes from a very large city, we spent the past weekend there, and I thought it was absoultely crazy it was pitch black out, you couldn't see a thing!!!  I am so glad we live in the city, takes me 5 minutes to drive to the grocery store!  Montana looks like a beautiful place, and congratulations on your new home!!!!
  • oh. my. goodness. It's freaking gorgeous. When can I come visit? ;)
