taking care of gifts

We are have an outdoor wedding & I have been reading some scary stories online about an uninvited guest showing up & nobody knew who that person was & they stole the gift cards and/or presents.I have to keep an eye out for the kids too (but not every minute though) I want to enjoy my wedding without worrying about the gifts. What are some really good ways I can do this? Thanks!! Anybody else have horror stories about someone stealing gifts?

  • Put your gift table far away from the entrance?

  • I have heard horror stories of gifts being stolen, but have never been to a wedding where it happened.   Can you put your cardbox/gift table near the food/cake table or DJ?  That's what we are doing.  Our wedding is indoor/outdoor (a small building at a park, so we have the building and the whole park reserved).    But most folks are going to be outside.  We are setting up the card box on a small table next with the guest book.  That will be in the direct line of the caterer (who is a family friend) as well as the DJ. They are going to keep an eye on it.  Also, the wedding coordinator/helper person that we hired will periodically empty the card box and put them in a private room.  You could also have someone do that occasionally and put them in a car or something.
  • A coworker was at her daughter's wedding and just so happened to catch one of the servers walk away with all the cards and go into the kitchen. She tracked her down and confronted her and she was fired on the spot by her boss. Had she not been seen though, she would have gotten away with it.

We intend to make a locked box for cards, and probably any wrapped gifts with go by the DJ who is a very close friend of mine and very trustworthy.

when we had our tasting, our coordinator gave us a very detailed explanation of everything with the gifts. there will be a table in our cocktail room and also our reception hall. at the end of the cocktail hour, my uncle (dad's older brother), will follow 2 of the hotel workers to the room where our cards/gifts will be locked up. again at the end of the night, he will follow them when they take all the gifts from cocktail hour & reception up to our room. i'm glad they have such a system in place! perhaps your location does as well, it couldn't hurt to ask.
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

  • That's prob extrememly rare, I've never heard of anything like this happening before. It really isn't a concern of mine. With all of the stress (or hopefully not) of planning a wedding, I really do feel that this rare occurance isn't something to sweat over.
  • I had wondered this myself at one point as well. I like the idea about having someone empty it from time to time and put things in cars.
  • The gifts no, but the cardbox has happened in our town a couple times and made the news. Both times it was later in the night when people had beemn drinking and 'wouldn't notice'. After dinner FBIL is taking the cards and putting them in his car.

If your reception space has a coordinator you could ask them to have a staff member watch the table.

  • I've never really considered this, but I would think having a trusted friend or family member load them into a car would be the best plan.
  • My mom and neighbor had me freaked out about this one.  They said I had to have a little money bag to tie to me....uhhh no.  At my tasting I'm going to talk to the hotel coordinator about where we can put the table.  I think after dinner it would be okay to put the gifts in the car/hotel room/etc because after dinner, who is really showing up?  Everyone should have put down their gift at that point.  I'll probably have someone empty the card box occasionally if need be.  And, if someone hands us envelopes after we remove the card box, I'll have to think of something to do with those.
