FINALLY! A Big "check"

The HM is FINALLY booked.  I'm SO excited.  We are doing an eight day cruise to the Bahamas (Turks and Caicos).  Neither FI or I have been on a cruise and it doesn't involve flying to get to the port (I'm terrified of planes)  so it seemed like a no brainer!

All that's left is booking the Amtrak train and a hotel near the port!  Those aren't that big of issues... I'm just glad we got the big thing done :)

Has anyone else done a cruise?  Do you have any regrets/things you wish you did/advice?

Re: FINALLY! A Big "check"

  • OOOOH I'm uber jealous!! I soooo want to go to Turks and Caicos. The only way we'd afford it is to do the cruise option, but I dunno if I'm a cruise kinda person (neither is FI). It's so tempting tho!!

    Great check!!

  • That's exciting!  We are doing a cruise too!  We knew we wanted to do an all-inclusive type HM but all-inclusive resorts were just way too much for our budget.  I've been on cruises before but not in a while.  FI comes from a family of people who cruise often (his parents still go at least once a year) and they love it.  It is really a great vacation.  You can be as active or as lazy as you please.  The food is typically great (and all you can eat so no stress of having to budget dinners so you have enough money to get you through the week).  You'll just need to budget extra for alcohol, excursions on the shore, some activities on the ship (like the spa!), if you want to go to one of the ship's restaurants that aren't the main dining room.  I do recommend bringing some dramamine though if you aren't sure how you do at sea.  Sometimes if the water is rough you can feel it a little even on the big ships.  It's typically just one night so I wouldn't stress about it...it just helps to be prepared!

  • We went on a cruise last year that went to Turks...it was so beautiful!

Definitely bring some non-drowsy dramamine...and take it as soon as you start feeling a little off and it works like a charm!

Although it's all inclusive, realize that there are lots of "extras" that you may want to budget for.  Ie. we ended up with a decent room bill from drinks, bingo and excursions.

One thing I would def. do again...and don't judge me...fill my mouthwash bottle up with booze!  The drinks are so expensive and most lines only allow 1 bottle of wine per person.

You're going to have an awesome time, enjoy!!!
  • Awesome! That must be a relief. I wanted to go to T&C last year, but the flights were too pricey from Philaelphia so we went to Aruba instead. We are going to our travel agent on Monday so cross your fingers for me!!!!

  • We're going on a cruise too!  I love cruises.  I've been on several, FH has never been.  I think he'll love it.

Volleygurl0306 is right, you can be as active or lazy as you want.  Booze can add up so be careful. You just sign for everything.  Order as much food as you want a dinner.  They'll be happy to bring you as much as you want.  Just don't overdo it early on in the cruise.  It's a marathon not a race. :)  Excursions can get pricey but feel free to explore a little on your own.  Or, a cab driver to take you around (they're usually everywhere).  Also, sometimes it's nice to be on the ship when everyone is in port.  No problem finding room by the pool.  Excellent service because they're looking for people to help.  I don't know what cruise you're going on but be sure to go to the shows and seek out the entertainment.  Royal Caribbean has some of the best shows I've seen.  They give Broadway a run for their money.

They great part is that everyone is on vacation so just about everyone is in a good mood.  I think you'll have a blast.

<div>You can also buy a ton of those little bottles of booze (those 1.5oz ones they sell) and hide them everywhere. Put them in jeans pockets, way inside your shoes, etc. </div>

Listerine makes opaque mouthwash bottle (FI took whiskey in that).
And some mouthwash is clear now so you can get away with vodka, white rum, etc.

We just each packed a bottle of mouthwash with our beverage of choice.

We had our wine in our suitcases (was supposed to be in carry-on but we flew and forgot to switch over) and it got confiscated.

They bring your suitcases to your room for you and I guess they put all the bags through the scanner and confiscate alcohol (we had it wrapped and towels and whatnot to protect for the flight and they still found it).

I think theyre too busy to open/sniff your mouthwash though!

ETA: I was totally paranoid and actually considered food coloring vodka in a clear bottle to be convincing.  Not necessary, lol.

Ditto ALL of these!!! Hubby & I LOVE to cruise, bang for the buck it's the best deal going. We try a& go at least once a year. The only other thing I would reccomend is to have at least one of you buy the pop (soda) card. It will save you a sh$$t ton on buying mixer for the mouthwash! (alcohol) You will have a BLAST!!!

  • Thanks for the great advice everyone!  I'm sure I will post something again when it's really close if I come up with more questions!
