Curling hair with a straightening iron?

I posted a question about curling my hair in long loose curls for the wedding on the Wedding Beauty board but it isn't too active so thought maybe you ladies could help more.  My hair is naturally pretty straight.  It is not quite thick and not quite thin.  On the Beauty board people recommended using a straightening iron instead of a curling iron to curl my hair (apparently there are videos on youtube).  I'm going to have to buy a tool either way and since I don't curl my hair often, I thought a straightening iron would be a better investment if I can in fact curl my hair with it.  Does anyone curl their hair this way?  Is it easy to do?  And, do you have a iron you recommend?  Hair spray you recommend?  TIA

Re: Curling hair with a straightening iron?

  • I do this all the time. I really straight hair and it seems to hold the curl for long periods of time.  I use a CHI and spray my hair once i'm completely finished. It took me a while to get it down...it's kind of an awkward feeling learning to curl it that way, but just start playing with it and you'll figure it out.

  • My hair stylist did this with my hair the other day:  Here my my hair normally:

And curled with a flat iron:

  • A salon curled my hair with a straightening iron for my cousins wedding and I thought it looked weird.  And normally my hair holds a curl great, but my hair was limp before the ceremony even started.  I definitely would use a curling iron. And I think a good curling iron is cheaper than a good straightening iron. Just get a curling iron with a big barrell and practice lots!

  • I get a much better-looking curl with a flat iron than I do a curling iron! I watched a bunch of youtube videos and practiced a lot. But essentially, think about curling a ribbon with a pair of scissors. The position/movement is about the same.
  • Oh this is how I curl my hair!!! I use the ozon. http://www.folica.com/tools/flat-irons/ozon-naughty-girl-titanium-flat-iron

    highly recommend!!!

  • Hmmmm...I've only ever curled my hair with a curling iron. I'm going to have to use my CHI and try this out!

  • Girls it depends on the size of the CHI and flat irons that you have.  The original CHI works best.  It's about a 1inch.  The larger ones won't really work and you'll have a weird shape.

In the salon, I never use a curling iron.  Flat irons are the only thing you'll see on my station.  In all sizes.
  • I would suggest trying a curling wand. I got one at ulta for $30 (prob cheaper if you have a coupon) and I have seen them on amazon before. It's a curling iron without the clamp part and you hold it pointing downward and wrap your hair around it. It gets REALLY hot (410 degrees) so I would recommend using the glove it comes with. A curling iron NEVER holds my curl, and this holds my curl the whole day without falling out at all.

This is the one I got: http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Tstudio-Collection-Digital-Ceramic/dp/B003V265QW/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1331852413&sr=1-1

  • I use both to curl my hair depending on how I want it to look that day. I do have to say that it takes a lot of practice to get use to curling it with a flat iron so if you want to curl it for your wedding I would start practicing soon lol. I agree with Dirty Water about the flat iron size ... one inch works best and you have to make sure you are using an iron with rounded edges, flat edges will cause creases. Also the slower you go the tighter the curl ... but be careful about stopping in the middle because that will also cause a line in the hair. So I guess what I am trying to say is try to go slow and steady for a nice tight curl ... if you want looser waves you can go faster. I do feel as if the curling iron gives different curls then the flat iron so maybe try out both before you make a decision!
