White Tuxes

Does anyone know if white tuxes are true white or move ivory/off-white, or do several shades exist?  I haven't gone to a store to check yet but I figured someone here may know.  FI wants to wear white, but my dress is not true white...I'm not looking for an exact match but I think it would look dumb if he was wearing true bright white next to my "alabaster" dress.
I did already ask this question on the attire board but the girls there felt the ned to offer their unwanted opinion on what my FI should/ should not wear rather than answering my question.
Thanks ladies :o)

Re: White Tuxes

  • I'm not sure if this is "not answering" your question or not, but the "shade" of white really won't matter IMO. No one's really going to tell the difference in white, off white, alabaster, ivory, cream, bone, etc. Really. No one's going to compare and if they do, it won't be any kind of deal for them.

I'm not sure if places do carry different "shades" of white. There may be a more ivory colored tux, but that would depend on the place you went to. You could just call and ask. You probably wouldn't even have to go up there at first.

I think they do exist, its just a matter of where carries the different 'shades'. You might have to do some calling around to find what you're looking for.
  • My dress store gave me a fabric sample of my dress.  Perhaps yours could too?  Then you could take the swatch to the tux store and find the jacket with the best color match?

  • I'm also not super sure about shades but almost all shades of white will photograph white. That's why a bride can wear an ivory dress and groom a starch white dress shirt and NOT an ivory shirt. Ivory dress shirts tend to look dingy in my opinion. I would go with a white, white tux and not an off white tux. In my opinion, it might take on that dingy tint like an ivory dress shirt.

  • Oh and ignore those girls on the other boards! If FI wants to wear a white tux, then get him a white tux! FI wants to wear tails- not the most common choice but I think he's going to look fantastic.

  • thanks ladies, I'm gonna do the sample thing and look around...I'll let you know how it turns out!

  • I know most tuxedo vendors let you look at what they have in store and you can see what color white it will be or bring your swatch in to coordinate the colors.
