Input please re: WTD with photos

What would you do with boudoir photos? I have a few options and I'm wondering if it's worth the extra $$ to have the digital files and make my own book, or if I should just have a book or another product made with the photos. I thought I really wanted the files in the event that I needed them or wanted them for something else, but what would I use them for? Or maybe it's good to have them in the event that the book/product gets lost?? What are your thoughts? (I did win a free session and $100 towards products, but it will still cost me to buy something).I'm considering getting this instead of the files:

Re: Input please re: WTD with photos

  • I knew I wanted to do a photobook because just a few shots wouldn't be enough to satiate FI.  Plus my MOH/BFF took some amateur ones of me last summer and while not the same as my professional ones, we still got some good ones.  I wanted to be able to combine the amateur and professional so a book was the best way to do it.

With my professional ones, I ended up getting 20 digital copies of my photos (mainly for the purposes of the book...also, if FI wants something else down the road I have the rights to do whatever with them.  Sometimes he comes up with things I never would have thought he'd like so wanted some flexbility).  With this, the place threw in a slideshow of ALL my pics (unedited though), a calendar with one pose on it (FI doesn't use calendars and idk where we'll put it but it was free so I figured oh well) and an acrylic of one shot.  I know the photo book will be awesome, but the acrylic is by far my favorite thing!  I think with the photo rights I could see FI wanting more of them down the road.  This would probably be comparable to your canvas.  I'm kind of partial to our bedroom being private so I may just hang it up in our bedroom after giving it to him.  Worst comes to worst it could go in our bathroom or walk-in closet if we wanted it private.  FI likes to show me off though and I think I rocked the picture so he'll probably want it in the living room hahahaha.  Want me to send you a pic of the acrylic when I'm home from work tonight so you can get an idea of what I mean?

  • I would probably do the book, though part of that is because I think FI would be confused by the box...haha, I think he'd be like, "what am I supposed to do with this? Do the pictures HAVE to live in the box or can I take them out?" A book is much easier to store and he can easily flip through whenever he wants a peek. Heh, and I'm sure your FI will do an excellent job of never losing those pics, so I wouldn't worry about needing extra copies, lol!

  • I really like the album.  How much extra is it to buy the files?

  • It's $100 more to just buy the files (12) rather than buy the book or the box; or it's $100 per digital file.

I'm creative and work a lot digital files, so I feel like I could really do something unique myself, but I do like the box (and the fact that I'd spend less). I'm not sure what to do...

My thoughts exactly!  I love the box idea.

  • I think the box is really unique.  FI is going to love anything you get him with your almost-nude pics on it!  I would ask how long they keep the files.  Perhaps down the road if you have some cash flow you may be able to go back and purchase more.  Regardless of how much FI likes the pics he will kill me if he ever finds out how much I spent.  But, in my head, I will only ever spend the money do to this once in my life while I'm in this good of shape.  I just didn't want to look back and wish I had bought more.  Their 6 month interest-free financing also helped hehe

You said it is $100 for 12 digitals without the box or book but $100 for each digital if you want more or less than 12.  Did I understand that right?  You should see if they will negotiate a discount for you if you buy the box and some digital copies.  If it is a smaller studio they may not be flexbile.  I know if I itemized the actual full price of everything I got vs. what I paid, I paid about a third of what it should have been because it was a large buy discount/bundle (I did go to a chain type studio though).  Can't hurt to ask though if they can work with you.

No, it would cost me $100 MORE than the other packages ($600 instead of $500 - not including my discount) to have 12 digital files. That's JUST the files. For the $500 I'd get the box.
It's $100 per digital file (separately).
I hope that makes more sense.

There are bigger bundles/options too... but nothing that combines files with product... maybe I'll ask.

  • Ahh gotcha!  I would definitely ask!  The company I used typically does portraits so at first they kept trying to push print packages at me that would be something like 1-8x10, 2-5x7 and a sheet of wallets of ONE pose.  Right away I was like "uhhh I'm giving this to one person and he doesn't need the same shot in multiple sizes."  After a couple packages they presented made no sense I explained I wanted to do a photobook and would like their other products (the creative stuff not sheets of prints) but would only *consider* getting if they were at a discount.  They kept working with me (there were 45 pics that if I had no budget limit I would have walked out of there with the digital files of) until I got to 20 files and ended up throwing in the other stuff I mentioned free.

Worst they can say is no, right?
  • I'd go with the book, because I think it's something your FI would be able to easily flip through instead of shuffling through individual prints. I personally would want the digital files, but I'm a photographer and would design my own album. That being said, I tend to discourage my clients from designing their own albums because they tend to now "flow" well when they do it themselves.

This motivates me to get on the ball with my fitness so I can get my Bpics done. :)

See that's just it; I design my own books and layouts all the time so I could easily do it myself. I do a lot of amateur photography and graphic design.
However, it would cost me more to do that (the files AND then buying the book afterwards) and what do I do with the photos afterwards? Do I need them? That's where I'm torn with this....
I'll see what the photog says...

<div>Having the files would be important to me, but it isn't for everyone. I guess I wasn't as concerned about having to print the album becuase I just order for myself at cost through my lab. </div><div>
</div><div>In your case, I would just do the album through the photographer.</div>
  • I am in love with the bliss box! FYI..your pictures are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thanks for your help ladies! I ordered the Blissful Box :)
If I want to order any digital files later, I have 6 mos to do so. At least I have that option if I decide I want to do something different.
