September 2012 Weddings

5 months and a week until the wedding and...

...I don't have the dress yet (although I know which one I want). Ordering one that's off-the-peg and shipping is a week tops, so no biggie as I'm aiming to slim down more to size -100 if possible ;)
We didn't order invites yet. We have them chosen though. Most people booked after STDs anyway (we're getting married in Gibraltar, living in UK).
FI has not have a clue where to get his suit from (linen), or anything else for that matter.
I don't have the shoes, or the money to get them (I've got expensive taste, y'know... £160 + dying is a bit out of reach at the mo).
We didn't order the rings (mine is going to be custom-made to fit the engagement ring). FI's one is  titanium band that is going to be ordered online.

I'm not sure if I'm just sane or silly. I'm an events planner, so sticking to the first option. Some of the UK brides have their dresses like 8-9 months before the wedding!!!
Anything you haven't done, which other people think you should've had done ages ago...?

Re: 5 months and a week until the wedding and...

  • I'm a procrastinator so if you ask my mom she would say I could pretty much have done everything sooner than I have :)  I still think 6 months is a crazy long time...

It sounds like you know pretty much everything that you would want so I wouldn't stress!  It will only be a matter of ordering things, not spending hours selecting, etc.  I"d leave yourself a solid month or two before as a deadline for when you want things to have arrived.  So order accordingly!  (I'm sure many people on here will differ from this opinion since ya'll are WAY on top of your game)
  • I feel you!

We haven't even begun looking at invites, if that makes you feel any better! Also, we have yet to talk to a single DJ (though he has been in contact through email with someone he knew in high school). And the main thing I'm spazzing about? STD's. . . we don't even have our e-pics back yet to order STDs. Most of our family and friends know the date already, BUT we have a majority of OOT. At this point I'm debating whether or not to even do them. I said that to FI last week and his response was, "Well I want to send them to at least some people." NOOO, not just some people, come on!!!

My advice would be to try and do the small, simpler things that way you can move on to the next thing. Prioritize a little. I think you have a better handle on things that are still on your "to-do" list. You know what you want, you just need to finish it. Good luck! We can do it!
  • I would suggest starting to order things you know you want.  And don't go too small on your dress or you'll put a lot of pressure on yourself.  A dress can always be taken in if you lose a lot!  As someone who has had to space things out because of cash flow (which is why I'm ahead of things,...knew if I waited until last minute I just wouldn't be able to afford things) I suggest ordering whatever will take the longest first and so on if you have to space out the big purchases.  Deciding what you want is the hardest part so sounds like you have it all figured out.  You just don't want to find out your top choice won't come in on time so I'd start putting your plans into action!

Thanks ladies! It's good to know that I'm not the only one who thinks there's still a lot of time left.

Smooch - why only to some people? Like, elder members of the family who like to keep this sort of stuff? With OOT I do suggest doing STDs. We had to do them. Have you considered e-STDs? Pingg does a great job with that.

I'm not freaking out, it's just that people give me the raised eyebrow when I say that we don't have things done yet. I mean, come on! We've got the venue, we've chosen the menu, my friend is hired as photographer (I am paying - she's a fashion and celebrity photographer, so I wouldn't even think of not paying...), I had to choose flowers 7 months before the wedding (7 months!!! S E V E N!!!), I know what shoes/dress/suit/underwear I want.... Half of the overall cost is paid... The item with the longest arrival time is the shoes - I have to order, then try them on (choosing between 2 pairs, depends in which ones my feet look least freaky), send them back for dying - but that's still 2-3 weeks tops. I've got some extra cash coming in April from the wedding I'm doing for a client, so would order the dress then... Anyway, we have a little schedule, but still people think I should have EVERYTHING done NOW:
    April - dress + invites
    May - shoes
    June - rings
July - suit and the rest of FI's outfit
    August - undies for me

    Erm... Am I missing anything...?

  • Satchkat: I actually didn't ask what he meant by it. I'm assuming he either meant older folks like you thought OR the OOT crowd, which I agree DO need the STD asap. I might look into the e-STDs, now that you mention it. I've been trying to reinforce to people as I talk to them (through emails or phone calls, etc) when the date is and that they are invited.

We've got 6 months roughly, so good luck finishing your list. It'll come. As I keep telling myself.

BTW I did e-STDs.  I didn't use a company or anything.  Just created a portrait style powerpoint slide with our pics, saved it as a jpeg and then inserted it into the body of the email (not as an attachment).  Wrote the name of the people we were inviting at the top and inserted a link to our website and signed it with our names.  since I used people's names I had to send individual emails but to send out 40 of them took me maybe 15 minutes!  The design took a little but you'd have to do this no matter.  And it's free.  Some people responded, others didn't but I figured how much people care is the same whether they get it by email or in the mail.  I sent it to my blackberry first too to make sure the pic wasn't  too big figuring so many people open email on their phone these days.  This is what the pic looke like:

  • volleygurl: Thanks for the tips. I'll have to talk with FI this weekend. I LOVE your STD pics! Good job!
