Mixing of Cultural Traditions: Puerto Rican/Jamaican/African-American

Hello,

I would like some advice and/or tips on mixing cultures for weddings. My fiance is Puerto Rican and I myself am African-American & Jamaican. I like to consider us (and our future children) an Afro-Caribbean mix. Although I have never been to Jamaica and my fiance has never been to Puerto Rico, we would really like to incorporate some aspects of both islands in the wedding. I already know that the biggest influence will be on food. :) Anyone is welcome to give me advice.

Thanks,

Katrina

  • My grandfather is Puerto Rican, my grandmother is black Caribbean :)  He loves making tostones.  Gotta have peas and rice (or as Jamaicans say, rice and peas)!  Bread pudding is always a hit too.  I like snapper too :)
  • Hi Trisha!  I'm in the DC area too!  In MD.  I am Puerto Rican, and my fiance is African-American so we are in a similar situation.

As for ideas with incorporating both cultures there is a lot that you can do being that the cultures are similar and both caribbean.  Are you having it catered?  You can have jerk chicken or fish, peas and rice, or on the Puerto Rican side have the tostones (fried plantains) which are easy, alcapurrias which are plaintains made into a masa, filled with meat or seafood and fried and are delicious!  Of course Bacardi is Puerto Rican rum.  I can go on and on. :)  Shoot me a private message and I can give you my email address so we can talk more if you'd like and I can shoot you over some websites that can help. :)
  • Can't forget the rice and peas! I love bread pudding and I'm actually really good at making it so that may be a new idea. Thanks! :)

  • I am African Amercian and Jamaiaca American Mix.  I would suggest rice and peas, salt fish, acqui (check spelling), and stewe goat/beef. Also, a Jamaican Rum Cake Congratulations.
  • I am Jamaican and I am having a regular wedding with a few tradtions thrown in (reggae music, some salsa and meringue and bachata, etc).  The food is regular old chicken (but with a Costa Rican flavor).  Fi is Costa Rican but loves Jamaican food so my mom and stepdad are making rice and peas, seasoned rice (a one pot rice dish made with ackee), french fried chicken and fruit punch) for the RD.

For your wedding why not have Latin and Jamaica fusion flavors, like the rice and peas, sorril or ginger beer, ackee and saltfish and fired dumplings.  It would be great to get a local Jamaican restaurant to cater and then a local Puerto Rican restarant to provide some stuff too.
